DURHAM, N.H. -The Providence College men's and women's cross-country teams both captured their first wins of the season today (Sept. 1). The men recorded a total of 15 points, sweeping the top eight spots, while the women came one and two and had four in the top six to win the meet with 22 points.
For the women's 5km race, junior
Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) and sophomore
Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) separated themselves from the rest of the field right from the start. As the race progressed, the women continued to separate themselves from the pack and never looked back. Coming into the home stretch together, Wheeler crossed the finish line first in a time of 17:21.37, while Coffin finished second in a time of 17:21.45.
Not far behind Wheeler and Coffin was graduate student
Regan Rome (Dalla, Pa.) and junior
Alex DeCicco (Sachem, N.Y.). Rome placed fourth overall and was the third Friar to cross the finish line in 17:50.58. DeCicco finished sixth overall and was fourth for the Friars in 18:00.26.
Sophomore
Hanna Johnston (Thunder Bay, Ontario), freshmen
Hannah McReavy (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and senior
Dara Cuffe (Cornwall, N.Y.) crossed the line in ninth (18:43.05), tenth (18:42.97) and twenty-first place (19:33.14), to round out the top eight, respectively.
The Friars put six in the top ten to win the meet with 22 points.
On the men's side, the Friars made their presence known immediately from the start. Right off the line, a strong group of Providence men created the lead pack, made up of graduate student Michael Wyman (Marion, Mass.), senior Nick Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.), juniors Liam Harris (Douglas, County Court, Ireland) and Ian Steller (Providence, R.I.), and sophomores Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) and David Rosas (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.). The Friars then made up a majority of the chase pack.
The top six broke away from the field at the half way mark with Steller doing most of the leading. As the men entered the woods for the final time, Steller, Wyman, Rocha, and Rosas created a gap running together until the final 800 meters.
Wyman, running a great last 800 meters, passed Steller, Rocha, and Rosas to win the race in 15:05.63. Rocha was the next Friar across the line in second place, just three seconds behind Wyman (15:08.23), while Rosas finished immediately behind to take third (15:08.71).
Rounding out the top-8 for the men was Steller in fourth (15:11.65) , sophomore Ryan Gallagher (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) in fifth (15:14.74), Harris in sixth (15:19.17), junior Peter Rindfuss (Hamburg, N.Y.) in seventh (15:24.85), and Carleo (15:26.43) in eighth.
The Friars swept places one through eight to win the meet with 15 points.
"I am very happy to start the season with solid openers for both teams." said head coach
Ray Treacy "Looking forward now to our first big test of the season at Boston College Beantown Invite in three weeks' time."
