Kick-off scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30 and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 2.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team looks to improve to 4-0 to begin their season for the first time since 1990. The Friars will take on two nationally ranked opponents in No. 3 North Carolina on Thursday Aug. 30, and No. 12 Duke on Sunday, Sept. 2. Both games will be played at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. for the Duke Nike Classic. The tournament includes Providence, North Carolina, Duke and Marquette.

Friars' Three-Game Winning Streak
Providence has started the season 3-0 for the first time since the 2015 season, outshooting their opponents 41-17 over the course of the three games. Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) recorded three-consecutive shutouts for the third time in her career, giving her 10 career shutouts as a sophomore. The Friars' three wins came over Holy Cross (2-0), Fairleigh Dickinson (1-0) and Hartford (2-0). Hannah McNulty (Warwick, R.I.) and Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y) are currently tied for the team lead in points (3), while five separate players have scored a goal for the Friars. All-BIG EAST First Team member in 2017 and Preseason All-BIG EAST member, Katie Day (East Kingston, N.H.) leads the back line for the Friars, who have not given up a goal in 270 minutes to start the season. Kayla Steeves (Needham, Mass.), earned All-BIG EAST Second Team recognition in 2017 and will play a big role in the midfield this week.

Birchwell Starts Strong
Amber Birchwell picked up three points for the Friars in her season debut against Hartford. Birchwell tallied a goal and an assist, as she proved to be Providence's main offensive threat. Her success led her to be named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll (8/27).

Scouting the Tar Heels
North Carolina enters Thursday's game with a 3-0-1 overall record and ranked No. 3 in the country. The Tar Heels have taken down Illinois, Ohio State and UCF while picking up a draw against Texas. Taylor Otto leads the Tar Heels in points and goals, with two goals and one assist totaling five points. Up front, the Friars will have to take care of Alessia Russo, a member of the All-Freshman Team and All-ACC First Team last season. Russo scored nine goals and notched two assists for 20 points in her freshman campaign. Russo will not be the only problem for the Friars back line, North Carolina has two members from the All-ACC Second Team and another three from the All-ACC Third Team in 2017 that have returned for this season. North Carolina currently has a goalie competition, both Claudia Dickey and Samantha Leshnak have split time in goal. Dickey has appeared in 200 minutes in net, while Leshnak has appeared in 180 minutes. Last season, Leshnak played every minute of the season in goal for the Tar Heels.

Scouting the Blue Devils
Duke enters Sunday's game with a 2-1-1 overall record ranked No. 12 in the country, after sliding one spot from last week's rankings. The Blue Devils defeated Ohio State and Elon, while tying Georgetown and losing 2-1 to Illinois. Taylor Racioppi and Mackenzie Pluck are currently tied for the lead in goals with two each, while Ella Stevens has provided three assists over their first four games. Duke led the All-ACC First Team last season with five of the 11 players, but only Kayla McCoy has returned for this season. McCoy sits at one goal and two assists, totaling four points which is tied for the team lead. The Blue Devils lost the ACC Offensive Player of the Year, Midfielder of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year from 2017 so they have had to look elsewhere for production. Brooke Heinsohn has taken over in net to start the season, after losing their All-ACC First Team goalie in EJ Proctor. Heinsohn has started strong, tallying three shutouts and only giving up two goals in their first four games. The Blue Devils have a lot of holes to fill this season but they have the ACC Coach of the Year, Robbie Church, to make those decisions.

Friars in 2017
Four Friars earned All-BIG EAST recognition at the conclusion of the season. Goalkeeper Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) earned the Friars' lone major award as a co-recipient of BIG EAST Freshman of the Year. She also earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors with teammate Kayla Steeves (Needham, Mass.) and BIG EAST All-Freshman Team recognition with teammate Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y.). Katie Day (East Kingston, N.H.) represented Providence on the All-BIG EAST First Team.

Newcomers
The Friars welcome five new members to the women's soccer program for the 2018 season. Incoming players include Caroline Drinkwater (Duxbury, Mass.), Celina Falzarano (Roslyn Heights, N.Y.), Elayna Grillakis (Lowell, Mass.), Hannah Morgan (Berwyn, PA.) and Mackenzie Simpson (San Diego, Calif.).

Four of the five players made their collegiate debut against Holy Cross on Aug. 16. Grillakis and Morgan were among the starting 11.
