PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The BIG EAST Conference announced its winners of the 2017-18 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sports Excellence Awards today [July 25], which recognize academic and athletic achievement as well as community service. Providence College had two award recipients in former field hockey player
Megan Hamilton '18 and women's cross country standout and current graduate student Catarina Braz-Rocha '17.
The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
The list of 22 honorees includes 13 seniors, seven juniors and two graduate students. Nine of the winners competed in the NCAAs in their respective sports this past year. Sixteen were or have been BIG EAST Players of the Year or BIG EAST Championship winners. Georgetown and Marquette led the way with four honorees each with DePaul, Seton Hall and Villanova close behind with three. Providence had pair of award winners, while Butler, Creighton and Xavier each had one. Noah Yanchulis and Alexis Walkden of Seton Hall were repeat honorees. Villanova's Cleirigh Buttner was honored in both the sports of Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field.
While the format of the awards allows for only one declared winner in each sport category, the selection of the recipients proves each year to be a challenge for the FAR Council, as candidate nominees represent exceptional student-athletes who excel in academics, service, and athletics, and are outstanding representatives of their schools and the Conference.
Hamilton is one of just three players in program history to earn All-BIG EAST recognition all four years of her collegiate career. She was a First-Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2016 and 2017 and was a Second-Team pick in 2014 and 2015. She also is the 12th player in program history to earn First-Team accolades in multiple seasons. Hamilton finished her career as a two-time NFHCA All-Northeast Region honoree and was recently named a BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Award winner. She also earned Providence College's Female Athlete of the Year (Team Sports). Hamilton concluded her career ranked 17th on the Friars' all-time scoring list (65 points) and tied for 14th all-time in career goals (27). She also recorded 11 assists during her career.
Rocha was a four-time All-BIG EAST and All-Northeast Regional performer for the Friars' cross country program (2013-15, 2017). Rocha won her second individual BIG EAST title when she claimed victory at the 2017 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships. She is the 10th Providence woman to win the individual cross country title. Rocha led Providence to its third-straight NCAA Northeast Regional title and also led the Friars to a 16th place finish at the NCAA Championships, where she placed 61
st overall. Rocha also was a Providence College Female Athlete of the Year (2017) and Paul Connolly Award recipient (2018).
