Strong Second Half Propels Friars To 71-47 Victory At UMass Lowell

Jovana Nogic led all scorers with 17 points and set the program's all-time record for three-pointers.
LOWELL, MASS.– The Providence College women's basketball team defeated UMass Lowell, 71-47, on Dec. 8 in Lowell, Mass. The Friars improved to 5-3 overall with the victory, while UML dipped to 3-7 on the year. Four Friars finished in double-figures led by senior guard Jovana Nogic (Belgrade, Serbia), who netted 17 points and also set the program record for career three-point field goals.
After going scoreless in the first half of play, Nogic opened the third quarter with a three-point bucket and hit 5-6 attempts from beyond the arc in the stanza. Her second three of the game came with 7:51 remaining in the third, marking the 253rdof her career, to set the record. She surpassed Julie Wheeler '98, who converted 252 three-point buckets during her career at Providence.
The flurry of hot shooting from Nogic fueled a 20-4 run by the Friars, to give Providence a 51-30 lead with 4:08 remaining in the third. The Friars maintained control the rest of the way, growing their lead to as many as 26 with 1:19 remaining in the game (69-43).
Senior Maddie Jolin (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) each contributed 12 points in the victory. Jolin added three steals and a team-best seven rebounds. Williams dished a game-high five assists.
Freshman forward Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) reached double-digits for the third-straight game with 10 points and added four rebounds and a game-high four steals. Sophomore Olivia Orlando (Winthrop, Mass.) put together another steady game with six points, six rebounds and a career-high four assists.
The Friars finished the game 49.1-percent from the field (27-55), and hit a season-high 11 three-pointers (11-24) at a 45.8-percent clip.
Providence started the game 1-6 from the field, but settled in to hit nine of its final 15 shots of the first half to take a 31-26 lead at halftime. Jolin led the Friars with 12 points, including nine in the first quarter.
The Friars shot 52.4-percent (11-21) overall, including 4-9 from three-point territory. Freshman Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.), who entered the game ranked second in the BIG EAST in three-point percentage, hit 2-2 from beyond the arc in just over six minutes of action in the first half.
The Friars return to action on Saturday, Dec. 15 against Northeastern. The game will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I., and tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
