KINGSTON, R.I.– The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Rhode Island, 72-65, in the opening game of the Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament on Dec. 1 in Kingston, R.I. The Friars evened their record at 3-3, while Rhode Island improved to 4-2.
The Friars trailed 41-30 at halftime and trailed by as many as 16 with 3:50 left in the second quarter (40-24). Providence closed the half with a 6-1 scoring advantage to get within 11 at the break. URI out-scored the Friars 18-8 in the paint during the opening 20 minutes.
Maddie Jolin (Rehoboth, Mass.) and
Jovana Nogic (Belgrade, Serbia) led the Friars with eight points each. Three Rams tallied eight-or-more points in the opening half.
The Friars faced a nine-point deficit (58-49) heading into the fourth quarter. Providence cut it to four points on three occasions in the final 10 minutes, but could not get closer than that.
Nogic finished the day with her first 20-point game of the season to lead all scorers. She shot 6-15 from the field, including 6-13 from three-point territory, and added four rebounds and two assists.
Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) tallied a career-high 11 points and contributed a team-high eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Nine of Baskerville's 11 points came in the fourth quarter.
Jolin completed the game with 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Davida Dale led the Rams with 18 point and six boards. Elemy Colome added 15 points and five rebounds.
The Friars return to action on Sunday, Dec. 2 for the second and final day of the Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament.
