PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's basketball team lost to the Wichita State Shockers in the fifth year of the Veteran's Classic on Nov. 9 by the score of 83-80. The game was the first of the doubleheader played on the campus of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. that was followed by Maryland playing the host, Navy.

A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.) picked up right where he left off from his record-breaking night against Siena (Nov. 6), converting an and-one layup followed up by a three-point basket next possession to start the game.

Providence's defense stifled the Shockers in the early going, holding Wichita State to 1-8 shooting leading to a 12-5 lead for the Friars at the first media timeout (15:36).

Samaj Haynes-Jones kept the game in reach for Wichita State early, converting the first nine out of 16 points on 3-3 shooting from three-point territory.

The Friars efficient start from the field left them with a 27-20 lead at the 10:14 mark in the first half, the team combined to shoot 10-15 (66.7%) including 4-6 (66.7%) from deep in the first 10 minutes of play.

Offensively Providence started to struggle as Wichita State's offense came together, Providence faced a 4:34 scoring drought leaving them with a 30-27 deficit before Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) knocked down a three to tie the game at 30.

David Duke's (Providence, R.I.) long awaited first points in a Friar uniform came at the 3:36 mark in the first half, he knocked down two free throws while the team was in the bonus. Duke was not done as he crossed over the defender at the free-throw line before finishing a layup while getting fouled during the next possession.

Wichita State ended the half on a 10-0 run to give the Shockers a 44-39 lead at the half. Diallo ended the half with 16 points, six rebounds, and four assists.

Providence gained some ground by the first media timeout (15:36) in the second half, Reeves contributed five points including an and-one layup as the Friars pulled within two, 51-49. Reeves finished with 19 points on 7-10 shooting.

Providence went cold from the field as they failed to produce promising opportunities on offense, leaving Wichita State with a 67-56 lead at the midway point through the second half. Diallo knocked down an important three at the top of the key to cut the lead to eight and halt the run.

The Friars could not find an answer for Markis McDuffie in the second half, the Shockers guard paced their offense as he scored 20 points on 7-8 shooting, totaling 32 points in the game.

With 4:20 remaining in the second half, Isaiah Jackson (Gainseville, Fla.) cut the Shockers lead back to eight with a corner three. Providence followed that by forcing three turnovers over the course of two minutes, capped off by a Diallo three to bring them within four. Diallo finished with a career-high 27 points while also adding 10 rebounds and five assists.

Wichita State started to break the press and produced a layup followed by two free throws after the Diallo three, increasing their lead to 80-72. The Shockers hit free throws to clinch their 83-80 win at the end of the game.

The Shockers shot 55% from three-point territory compared to the Friars 38% and both teams committed 17 turnovers.

Providence returns to the court to play the College of Holy Cross at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on November 13 for a 7:00 tip-off. The game will be broadcasted on FS2.
