Men’s Basketball Defeats Holy Cross, 70-61

Alpha Diallo scored a team-high 18 points with 10 rebounds for his third-straight double-double.


PROVIDENCE, R.I. –
The Providence College men's basketball team defeated the Holy Cross, 70-61, on Tuesday night (Nov. 13) at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. The Friars outscored Holy Cross in the second half 37-24 to seal the win.

Junior Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) led the Friars with a team-high 18 points in the game on 6-15 shooting, he grabbed his 10th rebound of the night with five seconds remaining to complete his third-straight double-double.

Freshman David Duke (Providence, R.I.) wasted no time getting the Friars on the board, knocking down a three from the top of the key in their first possession. Duke controlled the offense in the first half, breaking the press and facilitating to players on the outside. He finished with 10 points, two rebounds and one assist.

Kalif Young (Vaughan, Ontario) led the charge in the early going, corralling four rebounds in the first five minutes; one for an easy put back layup. Providence led 10-9 heading into the first media timeout. Young finished with eight rebounds in the half.

Nate Watson (Arlington, Va.) entered the game and dominated in the paint, the guards fed him on the block before he hit a right hook over the defender followed by a spin to his left side for a layup the next possession. Holy Cross also fouled him on the two early possessions trying to deny the entry pass. He finished with 15 points and seven rebounds.

At the 7:36 mark the Friars trailed 23-22, the Crusaders forced 10 turnovers in the half stemming from their three-quarter court press. Holy Cross contributed 12 of their 37 points off turnovers at the break.

Holy Cross benefited from a 4:13 scoring drought from the Friars with 3:39 left in the half, the Crusaders led 28-22 at the final media timeout before Diallo pulled Providence within five. The Friars hit their last four of five shots in the half, capped off by a Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) three with five seconds on the clock to make the score 37-33 in favor of Holy Cross.

The turning point in the game came at the 15:05 mark which started a 20-2 run for the Friars. The Providence defense forced a shot clock violation then came down on the other end and fed Watson in the post for a layup and the foul.

The Friars implemented their own press next possession, when Jackson cut off a pass before finishing a two-handed dunk on the other end. Duke wanted in on the action as he hit a three to tie the game at 48-48 before the Crusaders used a timeout to stop the run.

Providence scored the next nine points before Caleb Green hit a three to cut the Friars lead to 57-51. Holy Cross trailed by five with 3:14 remaining, 62-57 after Watson received a dump pass in the paint from Diallo to dunk home.

Duke sealed the game converting a break away layup that he was fouled on with 33 seconds remaining, the Friars led 68-61 after the missed free throw.

Providence will play their first game in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. against South Carolina on Nov. 17. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcasted on ESPN3.
