The Friars host Maine on Friday and play at Vermont on Sunday.
Puck Drop
The Friars welcome the University of Maine to Schneider Arena on Friday, Nov. 9 at 6:00 p.m. Provience then hits the road to face the University of Vermont on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 1:00 p.m.
Scouting the Friars
The Friars are off to a 6-2-0 start to the season and have a 3-1-0 mark in Hockey East. Most recently (Nov. 3), the Friars defeated #5 Boston College, 4-2. Maureen Murphy (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Christina Putigna (Grimsby, Ontario) each scored two goals in the win. Putigna also added an assist for a three-point performance that earned her Hockey East Player of the Week. Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) had her first multi-assist game of her career, notching two. Madison Myers (Colchester, Vt.) made 22 saves in her fifth win of the season.
Murphy leads the charge for the Friars with 14 points (eight goals, six assists). Hjalmarsson is second on the team in both points (10) and goals (five). Putigna is third, despite only playing in four games this season. She's got three goals, two assists and five points. Junior Whitney Dove (Port Moody, British Columbia) also have five points, with two goals, both on the power play, and three assists.
Myers has made six starts in net. She holds a .951 save percentage (ranked fifth in the nation) and a 1.17 goals against average (ranked fourth in the nation). The netminder has made 136 total saves and has two shutouts.
Multi-Point Murphy
Maureen Murphy has recorded at least two points in six of eight games so far for Providence. Last season, she had seven multi-point performances in 36 games. She currently ranks tied for seventh in the nation in points per game (1.75) and tied for fourth in goals per game (1.00). She's also tied for first in short-handed goals (two).
Where the Friars Rank
Providence ranks 12th in the nation in scoring margin (1.12), 10th in the nation in penalty kill (91.7%) and tied for eighth in team winning percentage (.750).
Brick Wall Myers
Myers has been excellent for the Friars in net so far this season. In six games played, she's 5-1-0 and has two shutouts. She's in the top five nationally for goals against average, save percentage and shutouts.
Spreading Out the Scoring
Through eight games, 15 of 18 skaters who have appeared in the lineup have registered at least one point. 12 of those players have multiple points. Additionally, nine different players have scored goals for Providence.

The Friars received votes in both the USCHO (four votes) and USA Hockey (three votes) Polls this week (Nov. 5/6).
Meet the Staff
Matt Kelly was named the sixth head coach in Providence College women's ice hockey history on June 18, 2018. Most recently, he served as a Head Scout for USA Hockey and the Women's National Team. His primary responsibility was to oversee and maintain the player pools for the U-18 and U-22 squads, in addition to the Women's National Team. He recently captured a gold medal with the Women's National Team at the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang. Prior to USA Hockey, Kelly served as an assistant women's ice hockey coach at Clarkson University. There, he helped the Golden Knights to the 2014 National Championship. He played at Wayne State and graduated in 2007.
Kelly hired Jake Anderson, Ali Domenico and Doug Ferry to round out his staff. Anderson previously coached at Merrimack, RPI and Holy Cross. He graduated from American International College in 2011, where he was a goaltender. Domenico, a 2009 St. Lawrence graduate, coached at Syracuse prior to arriving at Providence. Ferry remains with the program as the Director of Hockey Operations after serving as a student manager and then the program's graduate assistant for the past two seasons.
Fresh Friar Faces
Providence welcomes four new players to the roster for 2018-19. Annelise Rice (Excelsior, Minn.) joins the program as a sophomore transfer. She played 25 games at North Dakota (2016-17) and registered two points on one goal and one assist. Freshmen Ciara Barone (North Tonawanda, N.Y.), Sara Hjalmarsson (Bakeryd, Sweden) and Caroline Peterson (East Falmouth, Mass.) round out the new additions. Barone attended the Nichols School, while Peterson attended Saint Mark's School. Hjalmarsson went to school and played in Sweden, most notably for the national team in the 2018 Olympic Games in PeyongChang.
Murphy with USA Hockey
During the off-season, Murphy had several chances to compete for USA Hockey. In August, she competed for the USA U-22 Women's Select Team in a three-game series against Canada. She recorded two goals in three games. In September, Murphy was invited to U.S. Women's National Team Evaluation Camp. From Sept. 13-17 she participated in practices and scrimmages with the top players in the country, including 17 players that won gold at the recent Olympics.
Hockey East Preseason Poll
The Friars were picked to finish fourth in the Hockey East Preseason poll, which was released on Sept. 20. Providence received 54 points and was picked to finish behind Boston College (81), Northeastern (73) and Maine (59). Rounding out the poll were Boston University (44), UConn (43), New Hampshire (41), Vermont (25), Merrimack (21), and first-year member Holy Cross (9).
Scouting the Black Bears
Maine enters the game with a 7-3-0 overall record and a 3-3-0 mark in conference play. The Black Bears suffered back-to-back league losses against Boston College (4-1) and Merrimack (5-1), before defeating Holy Cross 8-0 most recently. Maine was inside the top 10 early in the season, but is currently receiving votes. As a team, Maine averages 3.80 goals per game (fourth in the nation), while only allowing 1.70 (eighth in the nation).
Who to Watch
Tereza Vanisova leads the Black Bears in goals (seven) and points (10). Vendula Pribylova has nine points on five goals and four assists, while freshmen Liga Miljone and Ida Press each have eight points. Press and senior Alyson Matteau lead the team in assists with seven apiece. 11 different players for Maine have five or more points already this season. In net, sophomore Loryn Porter has played six games. She's 5-0-0 with a .929 save percentage and a 1.17 goals against average. Junior Carly Jackson has played five games, is 2-3-0, has a 2.57 goals against average and a .885 save percentage.
All-Time Series with the Black Bears
Providence leads the all-time series 44-8-11. Providence is unbeaten in the last seven meetings between the two teams. Last season, all three games went to overtime. Providence finished 1-0-2.
Scouting the Catamounts
The Catamounts enter the game with a 2-5-3 overall record and a 2-4-1 mark in Hockey East play. On Tuesday (Nov. 6), Vermont fell by a score of 3-1 at Dartmouth. The game was tied 1-1, before two third-period goals lifted the Big Green to victory. Both of Vermont's wins this season have come over UNH. Their lone league tie was also against the Wildcats. As a team, Vermont only averages 1.40 goals per game, while giving up 2.30. They convert on 6.8% of power plays and kill 90.0% of penalties.
Who to Watch
Eve-Audrey Picard leads the Catamount offense with six points on three goals and three assists. Taylor Flaherty and Olivia Kilberg each have four points off of one goal and three assists. Maude Poulin-Labelle is the team's assist leader, with four. In net, Melissa Black has seen the majority of time. She holds a 2.17 goals against average and a .920 save percentage through seven games.
All-Time Series with the Catamounts
Providence leads the all-time series 32-15-4. Last season, Providence won the series with a 2-0-1 record.
