PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's basketball team improved to 4-2 on the season with a 91-79 win over the Iona Gaels on Saturday, Nov. 4. The Friars' 91 points marks the most they scored in a game this season.
Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.), David Duke (Providence, R.I.), Jimmy Nichols, Jr. (Conway, S.C.), A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.) and Kalif Young (Vaughan, Ontario) started under Head Coach Ed Cooley for the third-consecutive game this season. Diallo led the starters, finishing with 23 points, nine rebounds and two assists. Freshman AJ Reeves notched his second 20-point effort of the season as he shot 8-12 from field, including 4-7 from three, to score 20 points.
The Friars dealt with the Iona full court pressure from the start, with the Gaels averaging 11 steals per game, taking care of the ball on offense would be a factor in Providence's success all game.
Providence jumped out to a 9-8 lead at the first media timeout courtesy of a Reeves' three and baskets from Nichols, Jr., Diallo and Young.
After being named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the second-consecutive week, Diallo played strong in the first half. He scored 15 points on 10-15 shooting and added six rebounds and two assists.
Isaiah Jackson (Gainesville, Fla.) made his presence known in the paint with 4:00 to play in the half, he blocked a shot on the right block before leaking the ball out to Maliek White (Richmond, Va.). White passed the ball to a streaking Reeves for an acrobatic finish with the foul. Reeves finished with 10 points in the first half.
The Friars used a 10-0 run late in the half to increase their lead to 48-32 with 2:04 left to play.
Providence headed to the locker room with a 48-32 lead as they shot 67 percent from three-point territory (6-10) and outrebounded Iona, 21-11.
Young brought the crowd to its feet with 17:47 left in the game, Duke missed a left-handed layup and nobody picked up Young on running down the lane to finish the put back dunk (55-34).
Nate Watson enforced his size in the second half, he tallied 13 points on 4-5 shooting.
Iona started to chip away at the lead once they reached the bonus with 12:20 remaining, they cut the lead to 12 with 10:33 left in the game after Niksa Nikolic of the Gaels finished a layup in the paint.
Jackson stopped the run by hitting a wing three then next possession corralling an offensive board before being fouled on his shot attempt. He hit both free throws to make it a 74-57 lead 8:49 left to play.
The Gaels cut the lead to single digits for the first time since early in the first half after an Asante Gist free throw, 80-71 with 3:56 remaining. Providence outscored Iona 11-8 until the buzzer.
Jackson led Providence off the bench with 13 points in 30 minutes. He shot 4-8 in the game and 2-4 from three-point territory.
Up next the Friars will host the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights on Tuesday, Nov. 27. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. in the Dunkin' Donuts Center and the game can be seen on FS1.
