PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence lost in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament Championship on Sunday, Nov. 18, 66-47, to the No. 18 Michigan Wolverines. The Friars drop to 2-1 all-time against Michigan with their most recent win coming in 2014. This was the first game against a top-25 team for Providence this season, last season the team posted a 3-5 record against ranked opponents. This marked the Friars second appearance in the Hall of Fame Tip-off, in 2014 they defeated Florida State and Notre Dame to capture the title.

Michigan relied on their pick and roll offense in the first five minutes, scoring six of their seven points in the paint. David Duke (Providence, R.I) received an alley-oop layup from Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) to cut the lead to three before the first media timeout (15:15), 7-4.

The Friars struggled against the Michigan defense early on, turning over the ball five times compared to the Wolverines zero with 11:58 left in the half. Michigan scored six points off the turnovers.

Head Coach Ed Cooley resorted to the three-quarter court press to try and slow down the Michigan offense, in the first possession Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) blocked Zavier Simpson. Diallo came down the court on the next possession and hit a three to pull the Friars within four, 16-12 (8:36).

The Wolverines tried to get behind the Providence press, but the Friars picked up three blocks and two turnovers including a shot-clock violation. White led the comeback, hitting a fadeaway shot from the left block then a wing three that brought them within one, 21-20 (4:09).

A 14-2 run to end the half for Michigan sent the teams to the locker room with a 35-22 score in favor of the Wolverines.

Michigan shot 40 percent in the half compared to Providence's 28 percent, Diallo pushed the Friars with eight of their 22 points. He finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Providence opened the half playing with passion, Jackson picked off a pass in the press leading to an extra offensive possession. Diallo pulled down an offensive board and slipped a pass to Watson to hammer down a dunk. Watson finished with 10 points and four rebounds. Michigan led 44-29 with 16:22 to play after back-to-back threes by Isaiah Livers.

The Wolverines outscored Providence 22-18 in the rest of the half, they shot 44 percent from the field compared to the Friars' 28 percent. Three Providence players finished in double digits, Duke, Diallo and Watson. Duke shot 5-8 from the field for 12 points, he added four rebounds.

All 13 players entered the game for the Friars for the first time this season. Diallo was named to the Hall of Fame All-Tournament Team following the game. Jimmy Nichols, Jr. posted a career-high four blocks.

Up next the Friars will return home to face Iona College on Saturday, Nov. 24. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcasted on FSN/YurView.
