2018 Women’s Soccer Season Review

The Friars finished 11-6-3 and reached the BIG EAST Semifinal for the third time in the last four seasons.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team finished the 2018 season with a record of 11-6-3 overall and 4-3-2 in BIG EAST play. The Friars entered the BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 6 seed and reached the semifinal for the second-consecutive season.
 
Providence opened the season 3-0 for the first time since the 2015 season. Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) recorded three-consecutive shutouts in the teams wins over Holy Cross (2-0), Fairleigh Dickinson (1-0) and Harford (2-0). Preseason All-BIG EAST member, Katie Day (East Kingston, N.H.), led the backline for the Friars, which did not give up a goal in 310 minutes to start the season.
 
The Friars traveled to Durham, N.C. to compete in the Duke Nike Classic, where they saw productive results. In the first game they fell to at the time No. 3 North Carolina (Aug. 30), 1-0. Providence fell in an early deficit to then-No. 12 Duke (Sept. 2), 2-0, before scoring a late goal but they could not score the equalizer as they lost 2-1. Providence forced two close lossed to nationally recognized programs. Hailee Duserick (Canton, Mass.) and Hogan were named to the Duke Nike Classic All-Tournament Team.
 
Providence remained unbeaten over a five-game stretch from Sept. 6 through Sept. 27. The Friars claimed victories over Brown (2-0), Harvard (3-1), Drexel (2-1), picked up a draw at Arkansas (1-1) and began conference play with a 2-0 win over Villanova. Providence finished non-conference play with a 6-2-1 record.
 
Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium played an essential role this season for the Friars, as the team finished 8-1 at home. Their lone loss at home came against Xavier on Sept. 27 by a score of 3-2.
 
The Friars ended BIG EAST conference play with two big wins over Seton Hall (1-0) on Senior Day (Oct. 21) and Creighton (3-2) on Oct. 25 to clinch the No. 6 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament. Providence trailed 2-0 with its season on the line against Creighton before Hannah McNulty (Warwick, R.I.) scored two goals in the final 25 minutes to force overtime. Camille Murphy (Seattle, Wash.) sealed their BIG EAST Tournament berth with her first career goal in overtime.
 
No. 6 Providence faced the No. 3 St. John's Red Storm for the second time this season in the BIG EAST Quarterfinal in Queens, N.Y. The first match resulted in a 0-0 draw on Oct. 4. Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the tournament which proved to be the game-winner in the 31st minute. Kayla Steeves played a corner kick in the box before Hannah McNulty headed it up to Birchwell to finish. Providence prevailed 1-0 to advance to the semifinal.
 
No. 6 Providence traveled to Indianapolis, Ind. to face the No. 2 Butler Bulldogs in the semifinal round for the second-consecutive year. Butler scored two first half goals before Murphy cut the deficit to one in the 59th minute. The Bulldogs added an insurance goal before Birchwell scored in the 88th minute to make the score 3-2, which ended up to be the final score.
 
Five players earned BIG EAST postseason awards, marking the most in program history. Day represented Providence on the All-BIG EAST First Team while Hogan, McNulty, and Kayla Steeves (Needham, Mass.) were named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Hannah Morgan (Berwyn, Pa.) earned All-Freshman Team recognition. Day scored the game-winning goal against Marquette (Oct. 7) and also helped the defensive unit to 10 shutouts. McNulty scored 10 goals on the season, ranking third in the BIG EAST. She also added three assists to rank her fourth in the BIG EAST in points (23). She scored four game-winning goals for the Friars and tallied three multi-goal games. Her average of 4.20 shots per game ranked her 26th in the NCAA. Steeves scored two goals on the season with three assists. Hogan tied the program record for shutouts in a season. She recorded her 10th shutout against St. John's in the BIG EAST Quarterfinal. Hogan ranked 20th in the nation in save percentage (.856) and eighth in the nation in shutouts with 10. Morgan played a significant role in those shutouts, stabilizing the backline with Duserick.
