PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's soccer team finished the 2018 season with a record of 10-7-2 overall and 6-2-1 in BIG EAST play. The Friars entered the BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 3 seed and reached the semifinal for the fifth time in the last six seasons.
Providence defeated two nationally-ranked opponents during the season. The Friars opened the year with a 2-1 double overtime victory against then-No. 8 SMU (Aug. 24). Later in the year, the Friars shutout then-No. 22 Xavier, 2-0 (Sept. 29). Another notable result came when Providence tied then-No. 8 Creighton on the road, 0-0 (Oct. 22).
The Friars captured the Capitol City Classic with 1-0 wins over both Albany (Sept. 7) and George Washington (Sept. 9).
Colin Miller (Bel Air, Md.),
Tiago Mendonca (Faro, Portugal),
Joao Serrano (Evora, Portugal) and
Andualem Chisholm (Attleboro, Mass.) were named to the All-Tournament Team. Miller was tabbed the MVP after picking up his first two shutouts of the season.
After dropping the first BIG EAST game of the season in double overtime at DePaul, the Friars went on a five-game unbeaten streak in conference play. Providence picked up a 3-2 win at Butler (Sept. 22), a 2-0 win over Xavier (Sept. 29), 1-0 victories over Marquette (Oct. 6) and Seton Hall (Oct. 12) and then a 0-0 draw at Creighton (Oct. 20). During that span, the Friars compiled four league shutouts and went 463:59 without surrendering a goal to a BIG EAST foe.
Providence put together back-to-back 1-0 wins to close out the regular season. First, the team defeated Villanova, 1-0 in overtime, on Senior Day (Oct. 27). The Friars then traveled to St. John's and defeated the Red Storm, 1-0 (Oct. 31). The wins allowed Providence to finish tied for second in league play, at 6-2-1. Due to tiebreaker rules, the Friars earned the No. 3 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament.
The Friars hosted No. 6-seeded St. John's on Nov. 3 and bested the Red Storm, 1-0, in the BIG EAST Quarterfinal. The win advanced Providence to the semifinal game for the fifth time in the last six seasons. Providence fell at No. 2 Georgetown, 4-0, on Nov. 7.
Brendan Constantine (Glastonbury, Conn.) and
Joao Serrano were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Several Friars were recognized for their efforts by the BIG EAST during the 2018 season. Redshirt junior
Tiago Mendonca was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. Mendonca started all 19 games, tallying a team-leading five goals for 10 points. Redshirt seniors
Colin Miller and
Klisman Sousa (Sal, Cape Verde) picked up Second Team Honors, while true freshmen
Ramzi Qawasmy (Landsdale, Pa.) and
Gil Santos (Parede, Portugal) were named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team. Miller also started all 19 games, finishing the season with a 1.06 goals against average and a .720 save percentage. He set a new personal season-high for shutouts, with nine. Sousa played in 18 games, making 18 starts. He had an assist against George Washington and helped the defensive unit to nine shutouts. Qawasmy was also a significant contributor to those shutouts, as he started all 19 games at center back for the Friars. Santos scored three goals and added an assist for seven points in his freshman campaign. He played 12 games, making five starts.
Overall, the Friars played a lot of tight games. Providence had six overtime games and finished 3-1-2 in extra time. Additionally, 13 of the team's 19 games were decided by just one goal. Nine of those 13 games resulted in wins for Providence.
