Katie Day's first goal of the season proves to be the game-winner

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team defeated Marquette on Oct. 7, 1-0, after Katie Day (East Kingston, N.H.) headed in the game-winner in the 72nd minute. The game was played on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. The Friars improved to 8-4-2 on the season (2-2-1 BIG EAST).

GAME FLOW & NOTES
  • Hannah McNulty received a pass from Alessandra Arace (Pittsfield, Mass.) in the 12th minute on the right side of the 18-yard box. Nobody was positioned in front of McNulty but Maddy Henry made a great kick save on her right side.
  • Neither team put a lot of pressure on the defense in the first half, Marquette tallied three shots while Providence recorded four shots. Maddy Henry for Marquette came up with two saves compared to zero for Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.)
  • Providence's Katie Day picked up a yellow card in the 49th minute after a hard tackle at midfield.
  • Hailee Duserick (Canton, Mass.) took a set piece about 35 yards out next to the left sideline in the 57th minute, Hannah Morgan (Berwyn, Pa.) ran onto the ball for a header but headed it wide.
  • The Friars jumped in front in the 72nd minute. Kayla Steeves (Needham, Mass.) played a beautifully located corner kick to the edge of the six-yard box where Day headed it down and in.
  • The goal marked Day's first of the season and fifth of her career.
  • Marquette nearly tied the game in the 87th minute, Katrina Wetherell struck a corner kick that swung into the back of the net. The goal was negated by a foul.
  • Providence outshot Marquette, 11-10.
