PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team is set to conclude the regular season at St. John's University on Wednesday, Oct. 31. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Belson Stadium in Queens, N.Y.

Scouting the Red Storm
St. John's currently sits in fifth place with the ability to finish #4, #5 or #6 for the tournament. The Red Storm are 7-6-3 with a 3-2-3 mark in BIG EAST play. On Saturday (Oct. 27) St. John's picked up a massive 1-0 win over No. 24 Georgetown. The win solidified the Johnnies a post-season berth and marked the team's first win over a ranked opponent this season.
Junior Matt Forster and freshman Skage Simonsen have sixteen points apiece on six goals and four assists. Tani Oluwaseyi is the other St. John's player in double-digit points (ten). He has four goals and two assists. In net, senior Lenny Wilson has played 11 games. He holds a 1.19 goals against average and a .781 save percentage. On Monday (Oct. 29), he was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week. He made 15 total saves last week, including seven in his fourth shutout of the season against Georgetown.
Scouting the Friars
Providence is 8-6-2 overall and 5-2-1 in BIG EAST play. The Friars currently sit in third place in league standings. Providence most recently defeated Villanova in overtime on Senior Day (Oct. 27).
Matt DePerro (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) was the hero for the Friars, scoring the game-winning goal in the 94
th minute.
Christopher Roman (Glastonbury, Conn.) picked up his first-career point by assisting the overtime goal.
Colin Miller (Beli Air, Md.) made one save in his seventh shutout of the season.
Tiago Mendonca (Faro, Portugal) leads the Friars in points (eight) and goals (four).
Gil Santos (Parede, Portugal) is close behind with seven points on three goals and an assist. Fellow freshman
Andualem Chisholm (Attleboro, Mass.) has two goals, an assist and five points.
Joao Serrano (Evora, Portugal) also has five points (one goal, three assists). In net, Miller holds a 1.01 goals against average and a .726 save percentage. He's started all 16 games and has seven shutouts.
Playoff Picture
Providence will definitely host a playoff game on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. If the Friars have a better result against St. John's than Georgetown has at Creighton, Providence will have a bye straight into the semifinals. That would result in a home game against the winner of the No. 3/No. 6 quarterfinal game on Wednesday, Nov. 7. If Georgetown matches or earns a better result than Providence, the Friars will be the No. 3 seed and host a quarterfinal game on Saturday, Nov. 3.
Stacking Up Shutouts
Providence has seven total shutouts this season, including five in BIG EAST play. The team held a 463:59 minute streak of holding league opponents scoreless earlier this season. The Friars compiled four-straight league shutouts during that span.
One-Goal Games
Through 16 games, 11 of the Friars' contests have been decided by just one goal. Seven of those eleven have been wins.
Free Soccer
Providence has played six overtime games so far this season. Five of the six have reached the second overtime period, with only two ending in a draw. The Friars hold a 3-1-2 overtime record this season, with extra time wins against SMU, Seton Hall and Villanova.
Friars Versus Ranked Opponents
Providence has picked up victories over two top-25 opponents so far this season. The Friars defeated then-No. 8 SMU in double overtime, 2-1 (Aug. 24). Providence also took down then-No. 22 Xavier by a score of 2-0 (Sept. 29). More recently, the Friars battled to a 0-0 tie at No. 8 Creighton (Oct. 20) and fell to No. 24 Georgetown, 2-1 (Oct. 24).
Stacking Up Against the BIG EAST
Providence is currently tied for first in the BIG EAST in shutouts (seven) and third in goals against average (1.00). The Friars are fourth in shots (209) and fifth in corner kicks per game (5.44).
In terms of individuals, Santos is tied for fifth in game-winning goals (two). Miller is tied for first in BIG EAST shutouts (five) and ranked second in league-play goals against average (0.70).
Freshmen Impact
The Friars' roster features ten newcomers for the 2018 season. Six of the ten have seen action for the Friars.
Ramzi Qawasmy (Landsdale, Pa.) has started all 16 games at center back, totaling 1,513 minutes on the season. Chisholm has made six starts and 13 total appearances. He was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after a three-point weekend (Sept. 10).
Santos has come alive in league play, making six of his eight appearances in BIG EAST games. He's scored three goals and added one assist.
Kevin Vang (Cranston, R.I.),
Raimondo Partito (Philadelphia, Pa.) and
Christopher Roman (Glastonbury, Conn.) are the other Friars who have seen time on the pitch. Vang has made six starts in 14 appearances, while Partito and Roman have each come off the bench. Roman recorded a season-high in minutes against Villanova (59) and earned his first career point by assisting the overtime game-winner.
Up Next
The Friars have clinched a spot in the 2018 BIG EAST Tournament. Seeds will be determined following the five BIG EAST games slated for Wednesday. The quarterfinal round will take place on Saturday, Nov. 3 with the semifinals occurring on Wednesday, Nov. 7.
