Women’s Soccer Clinches BIG EAST Tournament Berth with a 3-2 Win Over Creighton

The Friars trailed 2-0 with 25 minutes to play before scoring three unanswered goals.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –  The Providence College women's soccer team clinched their fifth-straight BIG EAST tournament appearance on Thursday night at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium with a 3-2 overtime win over the Creighton Bluejays. Providence and Creighton battled for the last spot in the BIG EAST Tournament, the No. 6 seed Providence Friars will travel to the No. 3 seeded St. John's Red Storm on Sunday afternoon.

GAME FLOW & NOTES
- Elayna Grillakis paced the Friars in the first half with a game-high four shots, including two on target that were denied by Bluejay goalkeeper Katie Sullivan.
- Creighton only managed one shot on goal in the first half, but they made it count after Taryn Jakubowski put home a failed clear by the Friars after her teammate Emma Braasch's header rang off the post.
- Providence held a 9-6 edge in shots in the opening 45 minutes.
- The Bluejays extended their lead to 2-0 in the 58th minute as Kylin Grubb one-timed a cross from Kaira Houser.
- The Friars cut the deficit in half in the 67th minute on Hannah McNulty's ninth strike of the season on assists from Casey Estey and Olivia Lucia.
- McNulty was not finished after her first goal, in the 87th minute she stood over the ball from about 25 yards out before striking a curving ball to the far post that tied the game.
- At the end of regulation Providence outshot Creighton, 18-13.
- With a postseason berth on the line, Camille Murphy (Seattle, Wash.) scored just five minutes into overtime. This marked her first career goal.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
1-0 – (Creighton) – 30:59/1st – Emma Braasch's header hit the post, but the Friars' clearing attempt got knocked down by Taryn Jakubowski, who finished it off from six yards out.
2-0 – (Creighton) – 57:03/2nd – Kaira Houser sent a cross to Kylin Grubb at the far post and she finished it off high into the net.
2-1 – (Providence) – 66:05/2ndOlivia Lucia played a through ball to Casey Estey, who sent a cross to Hannah McNulty that she chipped off the crossbar just over the goal line.
2-2 – (Providence) – 86:22/2ndHannah McNulty free kick from 25 yards out.
3-2 – (Providence) – 94:39/2ndCamille Murphy received a pass from Casey Estey on the left side of the 18-yard box, Murphy took one touch and finished a right-footed shot far post.
