CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. – The Providence College Volleyball team opened up its season with a win against the University of Alabama, Birmingham Blazers in the Boston College Tournament on Friday, Aug. 25. The Friars won the final two sets of the match to earn their first win, three sets to two.
GAME NOTES:
-The match proved to be a back and forth affair with UAB winning the first (23-25) and third (22-25) set while Providence won the second (25-22), fourth, (25-23) and fifth set (15-9).
-In the second set, the Friars tallied 14 kills as a team while committing no attack errors.
-The Friars had four players with at least 10 kills. Junior Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) and sophomore Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) led the Friars with 14 kills apiece. Junior Megan Onyundo (Woodbridge, Va.) and sophomore Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.) contributed 12 kills each.
-Freshman Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) acted as the setter for the Friars, contributing 54 assists in the win.
-Defensively, the Friars were led by freshman McKenzie Lydon (Stuart, Fla.) with 18 digs. Providence also had Alderson (15), Root (15) and Barber (13) with double digit digs.
NEXT UP: The Friars return to action for the second day of the Boston College Tournament on Saturday, Aug 26. The Friars first place host Boston College at 1:00 p.m. before finishing the tournament with a match against Fairfield University at 5:00 p.m.
