NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Providence College Friars defeated the St. John's Red Storm, 86-75, in BIG EAST men's college basketball action at Madison Square Garden. With the victory, the Friars finish the regular season with a six-game winning streak and their fourth consecutive 20-win season. Junior Isaiah Jackson was one of four Friars in double figures as he led the squad with 18 points, including 14 in the second half.
The Friar defense controlled the first half and held the Red Storm to just four field goals over 20 minutes of play as SJU shot 4-21 (19%). On offense the Friars were led by junior Jalen Lindsey who recorded 10 points. Freshman Kalif Young had 10 rebounds in the first half for PC. SJU made 16 of 21 free throw attempts to stay in the game. Bashir Ahmed led SJU with 8 pts. Providence entered the half leading, 37-25.
In the second half with team's leading scorer junior Rodney Bullock in foul trouble, Jackson took charge scoring mostly in post as he was 6-8 from the field. The Friars lead grew to 16 points (71-55) with 3:05 left on a layup by Jackson. However, SJU started to press and created several turnovers and cut the lead to seven points, 78-71, on a layup by Shamorie Ponds with 50 seconds left in the game. The Red Storm would not get any closer as the Friars made their free throws in the final 50 seconds of the game to earn the 11-point win (86-75).
In addition to Jackson's 18 points, freshman Alpha Diallo and Lindsey each had 17 points and junior Emmitt Holt finished with 14 points. Junior Kyron Cartwright had eight points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Freshman Kalif Young finished with six points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Ponds had a game-high 29 points to lead St. John's.
Providence shot 29-57 (51 %) overall and 6-14 (43 %) from three. SJU was 23-62 (37 %) from the field, including 4-23 (17 %) from three point territory.
The Friars (20-11, 10-8), were picked ninth overall in the Preseason BIG EAST Coaches Poll, but overcame a 4-8 start in league play by winning their final six games to earn a third place finish. Thus, Providence will return to action on Thursday, March 9 in the BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 3 seed versus the No. 6 seed Creighton Bluejays at 9:30 p.m. on FS1.
