HAMDEN, CONN. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Quinnipiac, 62-36, on Dec. 6 at TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. The Friars fell to 6-4 overall with the loss, while the Bobcats (ranked 14th in the latest NCAA RPI) improved to 5-3 overall with their fifth-straight win.
The Friars, who entered the game shooting 46-percent from the field and were ranked second in the nation in three-point percentage (46-percent), were never really able to get it going on the offensive end. The squad posted season lows from the field (.321, 15-23) and from beyond the arc (.111, 2-18) and turned the ball over 22 times to the Bobcats.
Providence hit the first bucket of the game, but Quinnipiac went on a 9-0 run to take a 9-2 lead with 4:22 on the clock. Ny-Asia Franklin (East Orange, N.J.) halted the run with a turn-around jumper in the paint (9-4), but the Bobcats finished the first quarter with an 8-4 scoring edge to take a 17-8 lead at the break.
Quinnipiac maintained control of the game the rest of the way. The lead grew to 16 at halftime (34-18) and swelled to 21 with 2:40 left in the third quarter (46-25).
Franklin matched her career high in scoring with 14 points on 7-9 shooting from the field, and also contributed a team-best eight rebounds and two assists. Freshman Andrea Cooper (Edmond, Okla.) came off the bench to score a career-high eight points on 4-5 shooting and senior Allegra Botteghi (Bologna, Italy) pulled down seven rebounds.
Quinnipiac, who advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 a season ago, was led offensively by Paula Strautmane's 15 points and five assists. Taylor Herd notched 10 points, while Jen Fay was just shy of a double-double with nine points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
The Friars return to action on Saturday, Dec. 9 against non-conference foe Sacred Heart. The game will be played in Fairfield, Conn. and is scheduled to tip-off at 1:00 p.m.
