PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team came out on the short end of a hard-fought battle against Penn State, 60-51, on Nov. 18 in Providence, R.I. The Nittany Lions improved to 4-0 with the win, while Friars dropped to 1-2.

The Friars trailed 8-3 midway through the first quarter, but out-scored the Nittany Lions 8-2 over the final 4:41 of the stanza to take n 11-10 lead.

Providence extended its lead to three (18-15) at the 4:57 mark of the second quarter, but this time it was Penn State who responded, and tallied six-unanswered points to take a 21-18 lead at halftime. Jovana Nogic (Belgrade, Serbia) led Providence with eight first-half points, while Amari Carter scored 15 of the Nittany Lion's 21 points.

The Friars shot an impressive 52.9-percent from the field in the third (9-17), but Penn State still managed to win the quarter, 20-19. The Nittany Lions hit 8-16 shots from the field (50-percent), including 3-7 shots from three-point territory. Penn State entered the final quarter with a 41-37 advantage on the scoreboard.

Nogic opened the fourth quarter with a three pointer to cut Penn State's lead to (41-40). Jaida Travascio-Green answered on the other end with a jumper, before Nogic drained her second triple of the quarter (fourth of the game) to tie the score, 43-43.

Penn State answered with an 8-0 run over the course of the next 3:27 to take a 51-34 lead. The Friars battled back to within two (51-49), but it proved to be as close as they could get the rest of the way. The Nittany Lions used a 9-2 scoring advantage to close out the game, hitting 7-10 free-throw to seal the game.

Nogic paced the Friars with 16 points. Maddie Jolin (Rehoboth, Mass.) added 11 points, four rebounds and three assists. Senior forward Allegra Botteghi (Bologna, Italy) contributed eight points and hauled in a game-high eight rebounds, while also dishing two assists.

Carter finished the day with 23 points on 10-20 shooting from the field. Siyeh Frazier added 10 points for the Nittany Lions.

The Friars held Penn State to 23.3 points below their scoring average in the game, but were unable to take advantage of the defensive effort. Providence shot a season-low 34.5-percent from the floor (19-55) and were just 9-28 (.321) from three-point territory.

Providence returns to action at the Savannah Invitational, where the team will play three games against Savannah State (Nov. 21), Wright State (Nov. 22), and Stetson (Nov. 23).
