EASTON, Pa.- The Providence College Volleyball team won its final two games of the Lehigh/Lafayette with wins against Lafayette and Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) on Sept. 3 at Lafayette University. Providence defeated Lafayette 3-0 in its first match and defeated FDU 3-0 in its second match of the day. The Friars went undefeated in the tournament.
The Friars first match of the day was against Lafayette University. The Providence attack was led by Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) and Megan Onyundo (Woodbridge, Va.), who recorded 10 and nine kills respectively. Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) had a strong game in the setter role, tallying 26 assists in the match. Defensive Specialist Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) recorded 15 digs.
Sonia Musso led the attack with 10 kills for Lafayette. The Leopards also had strong showings from their setter Julia Howard (24 assists) and their defensive specialist Katie Kidder (15 digs) in the loss.
In the second match of the day, Impellizeri again led the Friar attack, recording 10 kills. The setter role was shared by Clark and Catherine Harding (Kalamazoo, Mich.), who recorded 13 and 15 assists, respectively. Defensive Specialist Michelle Cruz again led the Friars with 15 digs.
FDU was highlighted by the efforts of its defensive specialist, Carly O'Sullivan, who recorded 15 digs in the loss.
Michelle Cruz and Allison Impellizeri were chosen to the Lehigh/Lafayette All-Tournament team based on their efforts throughout the tournament. Impellizeri played in 13 sets throughout the tournament recording 39 kills (3.00 kills per set). Cruz played in all 14 sets of the tournament recording 78 digs (5.57 digs per set).
The Friars return to action on Sept. 7 with a match against cross-town rival, Brown University at Brown at 7:00 p.m.
