Bethlehem, Pa.- The Providence College Volleyball team won its first two matches of the Lehigh/Lafayette tournament on Sept. 2 at Lehigh University. The Friars defeated Saint Peters 3-0 in their first match. The Volleyball team then fought back from a two set deficit to take the win against host Lehigh in its second match of the day.
The Friars had an evenly spread out offense in the first match. Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) led the Friars with six kills (3.00 kills per set) while Abigail Dix (Gibsonia, Pa.) had five kills (2.50 kills per set) and Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) and Megan Onyundo (Woodbridge, Va.) had four kills each (4.00 kills per set).
Chicya Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) led the Friars with 16 assists (8.00 assists per set) and also recorded four service aces. Defensive specialist Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J. ) recorded 13 digs (4.33 digs per set).
Saint Peters' attack was led by Marlena Bunda and Danielle Lopez, as each recorded six kills. Kaitlyn Sitton recorded 12 assists and Amanda Colombo led Saint Peters with nine digs.
The Friars second match of the day was a back and forth battle, as Lehigh took the first two sets before Providence battled back to win the final three sets and the earn the victory.
Onyundo led the Friars attack, recording 17 kills (3.4 kills per set). Impellizeri also had a strong match, recording 13 kills (2.6 kills per set). Setter Chicya Clark recorded a double double in the victory. Clark had 44 assists (8.8 assists per set) and 10 digs (2.0 digs per set). Cruz had 35 digs (7.0 digs per set) to support the Friars defensive efforts.
Victoria Hemseth led Lehigh's attack by recording 16 kills (3.2 kills per set). Bonaire Berry also had a strong match recording 39 assists (7.8 assists per set) for Lehigh.
The Friars return to action with a double header on the second day of the Lehigh/Lafayette tournament on Sept. 3. Providence faces Lafayette at 10:00 a.m. and then faces Fairleigh Dickinson at 1:00 p.m.
