PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College women's soccer team was defeated by Harvard, 3-1. The Friars move to 4-3-1 and Harvard advances to 3-3-0.
Harvard sustained offensive pressure in the first half but in the 20th minute Katie Day (East Kingston, N.H.) made a goal stopping defensive play when she collected a ball that deflected off Kristyn Shea (Piscataway, N.J.) and dribbled toward the goal line.
The Crimson got on the board in the 41st minute after Margaret Purce sent a centering feed into the six-yard box. Harvard's Leah Mohammadi tapped the ball in on the far side to give Harvard the 1-0 advantage.
In the first half, Providence tallied two shots to Harvard's 10. Shea made three saves, while Harvard's keeper Danielle Etzel made one save.
The Crimson extended its lead to 2-0 when Rachel Garcia received the ball in the box and quickly chipped the ball into the top right corner of the net. Purce carried the ball through the midfield and took a shot to the far left post to give Harvard a 3-0 advantage in the 83rd minute.
Providence responded 55 seconds later with a goal from Rachel Ugolik (Hamden, Conn.) that was assisted by Casey Estey (Kensington, N.H.). Ugolik ran into the box with the ball and evaded a Harvard defender. The senior forward took a shot that beat Etzel to the bottom left corner of the net.
Shea made one save in the second half and Etzel also made one save. Harvard outshot Providence 13-7 and held an advantage in corner kicks (8-3).
Coach Lopes stated after the match, "All the credit to Harvard, they played a great first half and were deserving to be up a goal at halftime. In the second half, our effort improved and showed more drive to compete. You're never happy with a loss but for me, regardless of the result, I'm more focused on the performance and how we can learn from it. There are many lessons we can learn from today that hopefully can help us continue to grow and be better individually and collectively as a team."
