PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team defeated Creighton, 70-66, in BIG EAST Conference play. For the Friar's final home game of the 2015-16 season, graduating seniors Kris Dunn (New London, Conn.) and Junior Lomomba (Montreal, Quebec) were honored in a pregame ceremony. With the win, the Friars improved to 21-9 (9-8 BIG EAST), while Creighton moved to 18-12 (9-8 BIG EAST). It also marked Head Coach Ed Cooley's 100th win at Providence.
Sophomore Ben Bentil (Wilmington, Del.) registered his sixth double-double of the season, leading-all with 27 points and 10 rebounds. He also added one assist and one steal. Dunn tallied 17 points, six rebounds, six assists, one block, and one steal. Sophomore Jalen Lindsey (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) contributed 13 points, one rebound, and one steal.
The Friars opened up the first holding the lead, jumping to a seven point advantage with 14:50 left in the first, 11-4. The Friars maintained their lead until the 6:16 mark of the first, when Creighton took its first lead of the game, 19-17, as Isaiah Zierden hit a 3-pointer. From then on, the Friars and Bluejays battled back and forth with five ties in the last six minutes.
The first half finished with the Friars trailing by four, 32-28. Creighton's James Milliken led all in scoring in the first with 12 points. Bentil led Providence in scoring with nine points, he also added two rebounds and one steal. Lindsey added eight points and grabbed one rebound.
The Friars struggled to score, as Creighton gained an eight-point lead with 15:41 left in the game, 43-35. With 10:14 left in the game, Bentil hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 49. The Friars went on an eight point run to get a five point lead with 8:30 left in the game, 54-59. However, Creighton hit back-to-back 3-pointers to regain the lead with 7:17 left, 55-54. It would prove to be the final time that the Bluejays led in the game. Providence built an eight point lead with 28 seconds left in the game, 69-61. Bentil scored eight of the Friars' final 11 points to help the squad earn the 70-66 win.
For the game there were eight ties and six lead changes. Providence also outrebounded Creighton (36-34).
The Friars will return to action on Saturday, March 5 when they play their final regular season game at Madison Square Garden versus St. John's at 12:30 p.m. on FS1.
