ORONO, Maine - The sixth-ranked Providence College men's hockey team earned its fifth weekend sweep this season after a 4-2 victory over the Maine Black Bears on Saturday night at Alfond Arena. Brian Pinho notched what turned out to be the game-winner as four different Friars found the back of the net on Saturday.
With the win, the Friars improve to 19-5-4 (10-3-3 HEA) and extended their unbeaten streak against Maine to 12 games (11-0-1). Overall, Providence has won eight straight against the Black Bears (7-17-6, 4-10-2 HEA).
Nick Ellis (18-5-4) turned in one of his finest performances of the season, turning away 32 shots and several banner chances for the Black Bears. A night after making 50 saves, Maine netminder Matt Morris turned away 34 shots to fall to 6-7-3.
Erik Foley got the Friars rolling with a power play strike just 2:57 into the contest. A nice deke at the Maine blue line sprung the freshman, who curled and snapped a shot over the glove of Morris for his fifth strike of the season.
The Black Bears responded midway through the period as Andrew Tegeler sent a shot from the blue through a sea of bodies and past Ellis to knot the game at one.
Ellis made a couple of banner saves in the first, including a sprawling glove save on Nolan Vesey and a stoning of Brendan Robbins on a clear breakaway from center ice.
After Kevin Rooney's fourth of the season gave the Friars a 2-1 lead, Robbins snuck one past Ellis on the backhand just 40 seconds later as the teams went to the locker room knotted at two after one period.
Continuing to shine between the pipes, Ellis kept the Black Bears at bay in the second period with 10 saves in the middle frame. Vesey looked poised to give Maine the lead with a putback that Ellis flashed his blocker on.
Shortly after, Nick Saracino found a wide open Brian Pinho at the top of the crease and the sophomore made no mistake in finishing off his sixth of the season at 5:11.
Tegeler broke in all alone late in the period searching for his second of the night, but Ellis denied him with the glove to keep the Friar lead at 3-2 entering the third.
Just over four minutes into the third, the Friars extended their lead to two as reigning Hockey East Player of the Month Trevor Mingoia swatted a rebound from Mark Jankowski over the top of Morris to make it a 4-2 game.
Ellis and the Friar defense held firm the rest of the way to sew up two crucial points in the Hockey East standings.
Up next, the Friars will take on the UConn Huskies in a home-and-home set beginning Friday night at Schneider Arena.
