PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team suffered its third-consecutive one-goal loss of the season, as it dropped a 2-1 decision to Northeastern on Sunday, Sept. 6 in Providence, R.I.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead at the 20:17 mark of the first half as June Curry-Lindahl found Natalie Stewart wide open while rushing into the circle. Stewart collected the pass and drove a low, hard shot over the goal line. Northeastern maintained its one-goal lead into the halftime break.
Both teams attempted just four shots in the opening 35 minutes, while Northeastern held the advantage in shots on goal, 3-2. Providence held a 3-0 advantage in penalty corners.
Northeastern took a 2-0 lead in the second half as Kristin Abreu broke away from the pack and scored off a one-versus-one with the Friars' goalkeeper. Abbey MacLellan was credited with the assist after hitting Abreu with a through-ball up the field.
Minutes later, the Friars countered to get within one goal (2-1) as senior forward Emily Matthews (Marshfield, Mass.) deflected in a goal at the left post. It marked her first goal of the season and junior midfielder Adrienne Houle (Burlington, Ontario) picked up the assist.
Providence out-shot the Huskies, 9-7, and held a 5-1 edge in penalty corners during the game. Providence also finished with a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal.
Deidra Clymer (South Windsor, Conn.) recorded three saves for Providence in goal. Becky Garner stopped six shots in the cage for Northeastern.
Providence returns to action on Friday, Sept. 11 against non-conference foe Maine. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I.
