HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Providence College women's soccer team was defeated by Colgate, 3-1, on Sunday, Sept. 6 in Hamilton, N.Y. The Friars moved to 4-2-0, while the Raiders improved to 2-4-0.
The first half ended with a 2-0 Colgate lead with both goals coming from Emily Crichlow. Crichlow's first goal came at the 6:18 mark after a cross from Lauren D'Amico. With 30:46 into the game, Crichlow notched the Raider's second goal, Eliza Doll registered the assist.
With 5:30 into the second half, Colgate found the back of the net again. Jenna Raepple scored the Raider's third goal with an assist from Taryn Tomczyk.
The Friars scored their first goal of the game in the 61st minute after senior forward Catherine Zimmerman (Madison, N.J.) scored an unassisted goal off of a free kick from 25 yards out to make the game, 3-1.
Friar goalkeeper Kristyn Shea (Piscataway, N.J.) tallied four saves, while Colgate goalkeeper Erin Cummings registered four saves. Colgate outshot Providence, 14-10, while also holding the advantage in corners, 8-4.
"It was a very bizarre game," head coach Sam Lopes said. "I thought that we played well, controlled the game, and did well to penetrate the box. However, we struggled to have that final play to score on several sequences. Certainly, giving up an early goal in both halves didn't help, but there are more positives than negatives in this game, as crazy as that may sound. We have to regroup, recover, and be ready for our match versus Brown."
The Friars will play cross-city rival Brown at 7:00 p.m. on Sept. 10 at Brown's Stevenson Field in Providence, R.I.
