PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team defeated Brown, 2-1, on Thursday, September 10 at Brown's Stevenson Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 5-2-0 on the season, while the Bears moved to 1-2-0.

The Friars jumped out to a 1-0 lead when freshman Casey Estey (Kensington, N.H.) carried the ball down the field, crossed to senior Catherine Zimmerman (Madison, N.J.). Zimmerman found junior Rachel Ugolik (Hamden, Conn.) who was waiting on the right side of the box and bumped the ball in. The goal in the fifth minute marked Ugolik's first goal on the season.

Providence found the back of the net with nine seconds left in the first half to make the game, 2-0. Junior midfielder Jill Clapp (Marshfield, Mass.) scored off of an assist from senior Courtney Maguire (Smithfield, R.I.) and junior Kendall Andrew (North Easton, Mass.). It marks Clapp's first career goal, as well as Maguire's and Andrew's first assist on the season.

In the 73rd minute of play, Brown scored to make the game 2-1. Celia Story scored off of an assist from Amanda Lane and Carly Gould.

Friar junior goalkeeper Kristyn Shea (Piscataway, N.J.) recorded five saves in the win. For the season she had made 26 saves and recorded a 1.00 goals-against average. In net for the Bears, Christine Etzel made six saves.

"First, I want to congratulate [head coach] Phil [Pincince] on an incredible career at Brown and wish him tremendous success in his final year coaching and continued success in his future endeavors," Head Coach Sam Lopes said. "In regards to the match, as always it was a tough inter-city game. We competed for every play and I'm proud of this group's performance for many different reasons. We beat a tough and well-coached team. We will enjoy it and certainly learn from the areas we can improve on as we have another tough match against Boston College this weekend."

The Friars will return to action with an game at Boston College at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 13 at the Newton Soccer Field.
