Women's Tennis Competes At Army Invitational

WEST POINT, NY - The Providence Friars women's tennis team competed in the Army Invitational in West Point, NY on Friday, September 25th and Saturday, September 26th. Impressive wins were turned in by several Friars over the course of the weekend, as the team wrapped up its second consecutive weekend of tournament play.
In the first singles flight, senior captain Alana Prinos followed up her strong tournament at last weekend's Quinnipiac invitational with a 6-2, 7-5 first round victory over Army's Gabriella Spindler. In her round of 16 match, Prinos fell by a score of 6-2, 6-2 to Fordham's Mayu Sato, who defeated Prinos in the Quinnipiac Invitational's semifinal round a week ago.
In the second singles bracket, sophomore Nicole Cyterski began her tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 loss to fifth Priyanka Shah seeded of Cornell. Cyterski rebounded with an 8-5 win over Sacred Heart's Lindsey Post in a first round consolation match but dropped an 8-6 decision to second seeded Rugile Valiunaite of Army in the quarterfinals of the second singles consolation draw.
Also in the second singles flight, junior Jennifer DeLuca put in a strong effort against the draw's sixth seed, Cornell's Jane Stewart, before falling in 3 sets, 5-7, 6-1, 10-6. In her only consolation round match of the weekend, DeLuca dropped a tight 8-7 (6) decision to Ines Vujkovac of the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
In the third singles bracket, junior Amanda Pitocco lost 6-3, 6-1 to Melanie Allen of Army in a first round match. Pitocco then sailed by Fordham's Whitney Weisberg by an 8-2 margin in her first consolation match of the weekend.
Senior Hannah Zangari lost her first round match to Seton Hall's Julia Keenan by a score of 3-6, 6-2, 10-3 in other third singles flight play. Zangari dropped an 8-5 decision to Shea Brodsky of Binghamton in a consolation match.
The Friars grabbed a couple of first round wins in the tournament's fourth singles flight. Freshman Risa Takenaka scored a strong 7-6 (3), 6-1 victory over Army's Caroline Lorenzini in the flight's round of 32 before falling in 3 sets, 3-6, 6-3, 10-7, to Jacqueline Lazaro of UCONN, the draw's top overall seed.
Sophomore Grace Biciunas dropped a hard fought 2-6, 6-4, 10-4 match to Paulina Tafler of Binghamton in her other No. singles flight action.
Biciunas' classmate Brooke Burnside triumphed in her first round match by pounding LIU-Brooklyn's Isabella Wagener 6-1, 6-1. In the flight's round of 32, Burnside put together another impressive performance in coming from behind to beat Albany's Chassidy King 1-6, 6-3, 10-7. In the round of 16, Burnside again fought for three sets but was unable to overcome No. 5 seeded Allegra Hanlon of Cornell, losing 4-6, 6-1, 10-8.
In Flight A doubles action, Prinos and Burnside fell by a score of 6-1 to third seeded Marika Cusick and Shah of Cornell. The duo then lost 6-1 to Sala and Pejovic of Albany in consolation draw action.
In the Flight B doubles bracket, Biciunas and Takenaka dropped a 6-4, round of 32 decision to Destiny Grunin of Fordham and Gianna Insogna of Bryant. DeLuca and Pitocco fell 6-2 to Elizabeth Brozovich and Melissa Carlay of Marist in the round of 32. Cyterski and Zangari cruised to a 6-3 victory over Jessica Graham and Nina Larraza of Lehigh in the second round of play before losing 6-0 to Bridget Geunard and Sera Martorelli of Army in the round of 16.
The Friars will return to action this Wednesday when they travel to Hartford, Connecticut to take on the University of Hartford. The match will begin at 4 p.m.
