HARTFORD, CONN. - The Providence College women's tennis team defeated a tough, much improved Hartford team, 7-0, to earn its second dual match win of the 2015-2016 season on Wednesday, Sept. 30 in Hartford, Conn. The Friars secured the doubles point by earning victories out of the second and third doubles positions, and they finished off the match by not dropping a set in any of their 6 singles matches. The match result mirrored last year's Hawks-Friars match, in which the Friars lost the dual for third doubles, but took home victories in all other matches. The win moves the Friars to 2-0 on the young season.
In the first doubles match, the Friars' top tandem of senior Alana Prinos (Foxborough, Mass.) and sophomore Emma Burgess (Huntsville, Ala.) dropped a 6-2 decision to Hartford's Skylar Schaar and Ariel Haber. However, sophomore Nicole Cyterski (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and senior Hannah Zangari (Saunderstown, R.I.) quickly leveled the doubles score at 1 with a 6-0 pasting of Gianna Sabino and Felicia DeMarco in the third doubles match. The doubles point came down to the second doubles match, and it was the Friars' junior duo of Jennifer DeLuca (Riverside, Conn.) and Amanda Pitocco (Warwick, R.I.) who gave the Friars the overall point with a 6-3 triumph over Meredith Heitland and Emily Sneddon of Hartford.
With the doubles point in tow, the Friars would not look back on their way to another 7-0 victory. In the first singles match, Prinos faced a formidable challenge from the talented Schaar, but the Friars' senior earned a straight sets victory, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (6). The match was Prinos' first singles match in dual match play this fall. Cyterski played a second consecutive solid singles match, sailing to a 6-2, 6-3 over Hartford's Haber. DeLuca, still working her way back from a leg injury suffered last spring, was in command of the third singles match from start to finish, as she defeated Heitland 6-2, 6-0. Burgess emerged victorious in her fourth singles match by way of a 6-2, 6-2 win over Sneddon, and Pitocco held on for a 6-1, 7-5 defeat of Katie Long. Sophomore Brooke Burnside (Salt Lake City, Utah) continued her strong fall singles play and finished off the victory with a sound, 6-0, 6-0 win against Emily Lindsley.
The Friars will have the weekend off from match play, and they will return to competition at 3:00p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7 against Fairfield University. The Friars defeated the Stags 6-1 last March.
