KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced on Wednesday, Sept. 23 that the Providence College women's soccer team earned the Team Academic Award for the 2014-15 academic year.
The Friars were one of 867 soccer teams (307 men, 558 women) to earn the NSCAA Academic Award with an overall GPA of 3.39. Providence was one of 217 schools to have both its men's and women's programs recognized. This was the sixth time the women's program was recognized (2009, 2011-15).
The NSCAA Team Academic Award is given to those teams that exemplify a strong commitment to academics. In order to receive the award, the teams overall GPA must exceed a 3.0. The award is a reflection of the strong emphasis that the team places on academics in their role as student-athletes. The Providence College coaching staff stresses excelling in the classroom as well as out on the field.
In addition to earning the Team Academic Award, the Friars excelled on the field in their 2014 campaign and have had an impressive start to the 2015 season. In 2014, Providence claimed its first winning season in league play since 1995. In addition, the Friars finished ranked fifth in the BIG EAST with an overall record of 9-8-2 (5-4-0 BIG EAST).
So far this season, the Friars have finished up their non-conference play with a 7-3 record. Most notably the Friars have had wins at Boston College (3-2, 2OT) on Sept. 13 and at Harvard (1-0) on Sept. 22. The Friars will kick-off BIG EAST conference play with a game versus Georgetown at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27 at the Ray Treacy Track and Field in Providence, R.I.
