Field Hockey Hits The Road To Face Columbia

The Providence College field hockey team will travel to New York, N.Y. to face Columbia in non-conference action on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 3:30 p.m. The Friars lead the all-time series versus Columbia, 2-0. Last year, Providence defeated the Lions, 8-0. Columbia went on to finish the 2014 campaign with a 12-5 overall record. Providence and eventual NCAA Champion Connecticut were the only teams to earn shut-outs vs. Columbia last season. Sunday's game will mark the first meeting between Providence and Columbia in New York, N.Y.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE COLLEGE:
The Friars are coming off of a 6-1 victory over Brown in their most recent game on Sept. 17 in Providence, R.I. Five different Friars tallied goals in the match, including a two-goal effort from freshman Emma Lucas (Naarden, Netherlands). Junior Adrienne Houle (Burlington, Ontario), sophomore Abby Thornton (West Pittston, Pa.) and senior Emily Matthews (Marshfield, Mass.) lead Providence in scoring with five points each. Houle and Thornton have each recorded two goals and one assist, while Matthews checks in with one goal and three assists.

Senior Emma Mackie (Delta, British Columbia) leads Providence in assists (four). She recorded two assists vs. Brown and moved into a tie for 17th all-time at Providence in career assists. Sophomore Megan Hamilton (Warrington, Pa.) is the team's leading returning scorer from 2014 and tallied her first goal of the 2015 season against the Bears on Thursday. With the goal, she moved into 40th-place on the Friars all-time career points list (38 points) and 29th all-time in goals.

Goalkeeper Megan Guilbert (Morganville, N.J.) played all 70 minutes of the Friars' most recent game against Brown. She has appeared in three games overall (131 minutes) and owns a 2.13 goals against average, a 0.800 save percentage and a 1-1 record. Deidra Clymer (South Windsor, Conn.) has played 359 minutes in the cage, owns a 2.54 goals against average and a 0.629 save percentage.

Through six games, the Friars have been out-shot by the opponents, 93-87. Providence has held the upper hand in penalty corners this season, 49-34.


SCOUTING COLUMBIA:
Columbia enters Sunday's game against Providence with a 2-2 overall record. The Lions opened the season with back-to-back losses against Rider (5-3) and No. 1 Connecticut (9-1). Columbia has rallied to earn victories in each of its last two games vs. Lehigh (3-1) and Michigan State (3-2).

Michigan State out-shot the Lions, 17-8, including a 14-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Spartans also held a 10-5 edge in penalty corners. However, the Lions made the most of their opportunities to earn the one-goal victory. Columbia scored off a penalty corner as the first half expired and mounted a 2-0 lead in the 39th minute of play. Michigan State got on the board in the 43rd minute, but Columbia answered quickly in the 44th minute to quell any momentum the Spartans had gained. Michigan State closed the scoring at 63:11, but could not tally the equalizer down the stretch. Kimberly Pianucci recorded 11 saves in goal to secure the victory.

Meredith Kalberer leads Columbia with eight points on three goals and two assists. Christina Freibott owns six points on two goals and two assists. Anna Scipioni follows with five points on two goals and one assist. Pianucci has played 262 minutes in goal for Columbia and owns a 4.27 goals against average and a 0.652 save percentage.
