Men's Basketball Team Awards Announced

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College men's basketball Head Coach Ed Cooley announced the 2014-15 team awards on Saturday, April 25. The honors were given out at the team's annual end-of-year banquet at the Omni Hotel in Providence, R.I. Associated Press Honorable Mention All-Americans senior LaDontae Henton (Lansing, Mich.) and sophomore Kris Dunn (New London, Conn.) were named the Jimmy Walker Most Valuable Players. Other highlights included senior Carson Desrosiers (Windham, N.H.) earning the John Zannini Coaches Award, and freshman Paschal Chukwu (Westport, Conn.) being named the Coca-Cola Most Promising Prospect Award. Dunn earned the Marvin Barnes Defensive Player of the Year honors. Freshman forward Ben Bentil (Wilmington, Del.) earned the Lenny Wilkens Hustle Award. In addition, freshman forward Tom Planek (Oak Park, Ill.) received the Thomas Ramos Academic Award after posting the team's highest grade-point average.

Henton had another strong season for the Friars. He was named United States Basketball Writers Association District 1 Player of The Year and he earned USBWA All-District 1 Team honors. He also was named First Team All-BIG EAST and he was named one of five finalists for the 2015 Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award. Henton led the league in scoring in overall action (19.7 ppg) and he led in conference play (20.1 ppg.). He is the sixth Friar all-time to lead the league in scoring and the third Friar in the last five years to accomplish the feat. The senior forward also led the league in minutes played at 37.0 and he tied for seventh in rebounding (6.5 rpg.). Henton scored 21 or more points in 18 of the 34 games this season. His two highest point totals this season were 38 points versus Notre Dame on November 23 and 35 points against Creighton on December 31. Henton's 669 points scored in 2014-15 ranks 10th-best all-time. He became just the second Friar ever to score more than 2,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds in a career. He ranks second all time in scoring (2,059 points) and fifth all-time in rebounding (1,054 rebounds). This season, Henton established Providence career records for games played (135), starts (134) and minutes played (4,909).

In addition to Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America accolades, Dunn also earned NBC Sports.com Second Team All-America and CBS Sports.Com Third Team All-America. Dunn, who recorded the second highest Friar single-season assist mark with 247 assists, earned a number of honors this season, including BIG EAST Player of the Year, BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, USBWA All-District 1 First Team and NABC District 5 First Team honors. Dunn became the first Friar ever to earn the BIG EAST Player of the Year honor and the first guard in the history of the BIG EAST to capture Player of the Year and also earn Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. Dunn led the league in assists (7.5) and steals (2.7). He ranked third in nation in assists per game and fifth in the country in steals per game. Dunn also led the league in both of those categories in conference play and became the first player in the history of the BIG EAST to accomplish that in the same season. He also averaged 15.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Dunn ranked sixth in the league in scoring and 13th in rebounding. He tied for the team lead with seven double-doubles. On January 29, Dunn became the 14th player in BIG EAST history to register a triple-double in a league game with with 27 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists versus DePaul. Dunn was the first Friar to record a triple-double since Geoff McDermott accomplished the feat versus Harvard on Dec. 22, 2006 with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. Dunn's triple-double was the ninth in Friar history and the first for the Friars in BIG EAST play.

Desrosiers led the team in blocks, recording 79 (2.73 bpg) in 34 games. He also was fourth on the team in rebounding as he averaged 4.4 boards per game. The 7-foot Friar center averaged 6.7 points per game.

Chukwu played in all 34 games this season, earning three starts. He was second on the team in blocked shots with 23. He shot 66 percent from the field (33-50).

Bentil started 23 of 34 games this season. He finished fifth on the team in scoring, averaging 6.4 points per game. He also was third on the squad in rebounding (4.9 rpg). Bentil registered five doubles in 2014-15.

Planek, a finance major, has a team best 3.74 gpa. He played in eight games for the Friars.

In addition to the team awards, John Egan received the Duffy Dwyer Fan of the Year Award and Donald Goodrich was named the Donor of the Year.
