Women's Tennis Swept by Massachusetts

RIVERSIDE, R.I. - The Providence College women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to the University of Massachusetts on Friday, March 6 at Centre Court in Riverside, R.I.

In the first match of doubles play, the Minutemen team of Arielle Griffin and Aarzoo Malik captured an 8-2 win over the Friar tandem of Amanda Pitocco and Jennifer DeLuca. That match was soon followed by an 8-3 victory for UMASS' Anna Woosley and Chanel Glasper against the Friars' No. 3 doubles team of Hannah Zangari and Nicole Cyterski. Providence College's No. 1 doubles team of Alana Prinos and Emma Burgess led 4-3 in their first doubles match against Ana Yrastuza and Carol Benito but were unable to hold on, falling by a final score of 8-4.

In singles play, the Minutemen managed to sweep all 6 singles matches on their way to victory. Cyterski fought valiantly but was overwhelmed by Yrastuza 6-1, 6-3 out of No. 1 singles. In the No. 3 singles match, DeLuca fell to Woosley by a score of 6-0, 6-4, while Burgess was defeated 6-2, 6-1 by the Minutemen's Benito in the 4th singles contest. Pitocco was blanked 6-0, 6-0 out of 5th singles by Glasper, and despite a well-played second set, Zangari was bested 6-1, 6-4 by Brittany Collens in the No. 6 singles match. The Friars' Prinos played the tightest match of the day out of No. 2 singles, dropping the first set 6-4 but rebounding to capture the second set 6-2. In the 10 point tiebreaker that would determine the 3rd set, Prinos was defeated by a 10-5 margin, giving UMASS their final win of the day.

The Friars will now turn their attention to their week of competition in Orlando, Florida. The team will take on the University of South Dakota on Tuesday and then play their first BIG EAST conference match of the year on Thursday against the Creighton University Blue Jays.
