ORLANDO, FLA. - The Providence Friars women's tennis team claimed a signature victory for its 2014-15 campaign with a 5-2 defeat of the University of South Dakota on Tuesday, March 10. South Datoka was ranked #72 in the ITA Women's Tennis rankings two weeks ago. The match was the first of two contests that the Friars will play in the Orlando area during the Spring Break week.

The Friars continued their strong play in doubles matches this season, capturing the doubles point with ease against South Dakota's pairings. Freshman Nicole Cyterski and junior Hannah Zangari sailed past South Dakota's Rymma Maslova and Yamini Reddy on their way to an 8-1 win in the No. 3 doubles match. The Friar duo's versatility was evident, as they played consistent tennis while finishing numerous points aggressively at net. Cyterski and Zangari improve their record to 4-2 on the spring season. Cyterski and Zangari's victory was soon followed by a decisive 8-2 win for the Friars' No. 1 doubles team of junior Alana Prinos and freshman Emma Burgess against South Dakota's top tandem of Alice Scott and Dragana Brankovic. Prinos and Burgess dominated the match from start to finish by combining the junior's powerful serve and steady play with the freshman's brilliant touch. Prinos and Burgess improved to 3-2 on the year out of the difficult 1st doubles position. With the doubles point already clinched in favor of the Friars, the team's No. 2 pairing of sophomores Jennifer DeLuca and Amanda Pitocco fell by an 8-6 margin to South Dakota's Mili Pavlovic and Yuliya Sidenko.

The Friars reeled off four consecutive victories in singles play to race to a 5-0 lead and clinch the team's second victory of the spring season. Zangari began the success in singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 win against South Dakota's Reddy in the No. 6 singles match. Zangari's consistency overwhelmed Reddy, allowing for the Friars' junior to cruise to her second singles victory of the spring.

Pitocco followed Zangari's lead by clinching a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Scott in the contest for No. 5 singles. After a back and forth first set, the sophomore settled in and dominated the final set of play to close out the Friars' 3rd point of the day.

For the third consecutive Friars victory, a Prinos win out of No. 2 singles gave the team its 4th point of the day. The junior defeated South Dakota's Pavlovic by a final score of 6-2, 6-0. After Pavlovic began the tilt by winning two of the first three games, Prinos gained control of the match through strong, consistent groundstrokes and a steady on-court demeanor.

The final Friar point of the day would come via Burgess' 6-3, 6-1 victory over Brankovic out of the No. 4 singles position. The Friar freshman was impressive throughout the match, particularly in a second set that saw her commit few errors in gaining separation from Brankovic.

With the match already decided, the Friars fell in the final two matches of play. DeLuca dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Sidenko in the 3rd singles match. In the 1st singles contest, Cyterski captured a hard-fought first set against Maslova by a score of 7-6 (3), but the Friar freshman would be forced to retire from the match while trailing 2-5 in the second set.

The Friars have now won 2 of their last 3 matches and will look to continue their winning ways when they take on Creighton University on Thursday in the team's first Big East Conference match of the 2015 season. GO FRIARS!
