PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Providence College men's and women's swimming and diving teams were defeated by the Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday, Feb. 7 in Piscataway, N.J. The men's team lost 200-71 while the women were defeated 208-70.
On the women's side, freshman Kellen Buckley (Wrentham, Mass.) earned third place in the 200y IM (2:19.48) and fourth place in the 200y backstroke (2:15.46). Senior Leia Federiconi (Williamsville, N.Y.) placed fourth in the 100y breaststroke (1:09.30), while freshman Katherine Fallon (Warren, N.J.) took third place in the 200y freestyle touching the wall at 1:56.82. Freshman Megan Collins (Trumbull, Conn.) placed fourth in the 200y breaststroke (2:34.99).
On the men's side, sophomore Michael Martinico (Nesconset, N.Y.) took second place in the 100y freestyle (48.62) and third in the 200y freestyle (1:47.57). Sophomore Zachary Begnaud (Natchitoches, La.) placed third in the 500y freestyle (4:58.40), while sophomore William Fierro Joyce (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) took third in the 200y backstroke (2:03.56). Senior John Fatigati (Mahwah, N.J.) earned a first-place finish in both the 100y breaststroke (1:01.81) and 200y breaststroke (2:15.11). Freshman Christopher Asgian (Loveland, Ohio) took second in the 100y butterfly (54.91) and third in the 200y butterfly (2:04.12). Freshman Connor Fabian (LaGrange Park, Ill.) earned second in the 200y breaststroke (2:17.33). The 200y freestyle relay consisting of Martinico, sophomore Jonathan Mariner (Marion, Mass), Fatigati, and senior Justin Tse (Framingham, Mass.) finished second (1:29.33), out touched by Georgetown by less than three seconds.
The Swimming and Diving BIG EAST Championships will begin Wednesday, Feb. 18 and will run through Saturday, Feb. 21. The events will be held at Ithaca College in Ithaca, N.Y., starting at 10 a.m. each day.
