Box Score

BOSTON -- Sophomore defenseman Jake Walman scored twice for the top-ranked Friars, including the tying goal late in a 3-3 tie against Boston University on Saturday afternoon at Agganis Arena. The Friars match the program record for a nine-game unbeaten streak to open a season (6-0-3) and run their unbeaten stretch dating back to last season to 13-games (10-0-3).

130 minutes of intense, playoff-like action over the previous two nights yielded tremendous atmospheres at both venues, with both teams securing two valuable points in the Hockey East standings.

Goals had been at a premium for these teams over the last 24 hours and that was no different in the early going with both goaltenders looking sharp. The Friars power play went to work with several good looks, including John Gilmour's putback at an empty net that LaCouvee sprawled across to keep out.

Strong work along the boards by Nick Saracino led to Brian Pinho's third strike of the season at 17:13 to give the Friars a 1-0 lead. The senior forced a turnover along the half wall and found a streaking Pinho in the slot, who wired a shot past LaCouvee.

A penalty marred middle stanza saw nine minor penalties called, as Providence continued to try to build on its one-goal cushion. The hosts continued to mount pressure, attempting 26 shots during the period, but Ellis continued his stellar play to keep BU off the scoreboard.

Going on a 5-on-3 man-advantage for the second consecutive night, the Friars this time cashed in with a big insurance goal as Jake Walman's blast from the point beat LaCouvee to give PC the 2-0 cushion. Walman's eighth goal of the season was assisted by Trevor Mingoia, who now had a team high nine assists this season.

BU kept pressing to draw within one with several banner chances on a delayed penalty, including a shot off the inside of the post by Ahti Oksanen that stayed out.

Despite Ellis making several sparkling saves in the opening minutes of the third, BU evened things up with two goals in a span of 2:28. Oksanen found the short side on the power play before Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson leveled the score after BU power play expired minutes later. The Terriers then grabbed their first lead of the contest at 12:32, with Forsbacka Karlsson notching his second of the game to give the hosts a 3-2 lead.

In a near carbon copy of his first goal, Walman got the equalizer for the Friars on the power play 1:17 later, grabbing the national lead in goals in the process with his ninth tally of the season.

Both teams had their chances in the finals minutes of regulation and overtime, but neither could find the back of the net. Providence sprung for a 2-on-1 at the beginning of the extra session, but LaCouvee got his blocker on it to deny a Mark Jankowski shot ticketed for the top corner.

Ellis improved to 5-0-3 this season, as he turned away 34 shots, while LaCouvee made 32 saves to improve to 4-1-2.
