Oct. 9, 2015

VILLANOVA, PA. - The Providence College field hockey team fell to Villanova, 3-1, in BIG EAST Conference play on Oct. 9 in Villanova, Pa.

Providence jumped on the scoreboard to take a 1-0 lead just 2:00 minutes into the game as freshman Emma Lucas (Naarden, Netherlands) converted her fourth goal of the season off of a penalty corner. Sophomore Megan Hamilton (Warrington, Pa.) was credited with the assist.

The Wildcats answered with back-to-back goals at 4:48 and 10:56 to take a 2-1 lead. Allison Sayia struck first off a feed from Kristen Mericle. Francesca Bello followed with her seventh tally of the season, after receiving a pass from Kayla Kenney.

The Wildcats took their one-goal advantage into halftime. Prior to beginning the second half, lightening and strong storms rolled into the area, which caused two separate weather delays, totaling an hour and forty minutes.

When play finally resumed, the Friars peppered the Wildcats with seven shots and recorded five penalty corners through the first 20 minutes, but were unable to find the back of the cage. The Wildcats managed their first opportunities on the offensive end at 57:52 and 58:19 with back-to-back penalty corners, but Villanova did not record a single shot on either chance.

Villanova got the insurance goal it was looking for at 67:29 to seal the victory as Kenney found the back of the net off a pass from Mericle. The Wildcats held the Friars scoreless and went on to claim the victory, 3-1.

Providence's out-shot Villanova, 11-6, including an 8-2 advantage in the second half. The Friars also accumulated 11 penalty corners in the game, compared to Villanova's six. Seven of the Friars' offensive corners came in the second half, but failed to yield a goal.

Deidra Clymer (South Windsor, Conn.) made two saves in goal for Providence in the loss. Erika Miller secured the victory for Villanova with six saves.

Providence will travel to Hamden, Conn. to take on Quinnipiac in non-conference action on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 1:00 p.m.
