The Providence College women's soccer defeated Villanova in double overtime, 1-0, on Oct. 8 at the Ray Treacy Track in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 9-5 (2-2 BIG EAST), while the Wildcats moved to 1-12 (0-4 BIG EAST).
The first half ended scoreless with Providence leading in shots, 5-4.
In the second half, the Friars had two opportunities in the last minute with back-to-back corner kicks that were cleared by Villanova, to send the match into overtime.
The match remained scoreless after the first 10-minute overtime, but in the 103rdminute, senior Catherine Zimmerman (Madison, N.J.) scored an unassisted goal from 12 yards out.
Providence's junior goalkeeper Kristyn Shea (Piscataway, N.J.) was in net for all 103 minutes and recorded one save. With the win, she recorded her fifth shutout this season and owns a 1.11 goals-against average. Villanova goalkeeper Emma Meyer also recorded one save. The Friars led in shots for the game (15-9), as well as corners (7-2).
"It was a well-deserved win," Head Coach Sam Lopes said. "We played very well tonight and I was proud of how we kept playing with purpose versus hopeful soccer. It is not very easy to score when a team is defending so deep in their own box. We played to win and made enough plays to get the result so tons of credit to the team."
The Friars return to action with a game at Marquette at 2:00 p.m. on Oct. 11 in Milwaukee, Wis.
