PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team was defeated by Butler, 3-1, on Sunday, Oct. 4 at the Ray Treacy in BIG EAST action. The Friars moved to 8-5 (1-2 BIG EAST), while the Bulldogs improved to 9-4-1 (2-1 BIG EAST).
The Friars got on the scoreboard in the 31st minute to make the game, 1-0. Senior Morgan Thomasian (Manasquan, N.J.) fired a shot from 20 yards out after a feed from freshman Kayla Steeves (Needham, Mass.). The goal marks Thomasian's first goal on the season.
In the 43rd minute Butler's Sophia Maccagnone took a penalty kick that tied the game, 1-1. At the half, the Friars and Bulldogs were even on shots (8).
Butler pulled ahead in the second half with an unassisted goal from Maccagnone at 55:39 and five minutes later (60:47) Shannon McDevitt scored off of a corner kick from Serina Kashimoto to give Butler a 3-1 lead.
For the game, junior goalkeeper Kristyn Shea (Piscataway, N.J.) made seven saves in 90 minutes. Butler goalkeeper Madison Card made three saves. The Bulldogs outshot the Friars (20-11), while also holding the advantage in corner kicks (12-1).
"I give credit to Butler, they out worked us and won every duel, so it was a well-deserved win for them," Head Coach Sam Lopes said. "They did a good job making the game territorial and we didn't respond. We struggled today on many levels. There are no easy BIG EAST games, so it will be important for us to regroup and get ready for the next match."
The Friars will continue BIG EAST Conference play versus Villanova at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8 at the Ray Treacy Track and Field Complex in Providence, R.I.
