KINGSTON, R.I. - The Providence College women's tennis team put forth a dominant showing at Saturday's University of Rhode Island Doubles Invitational, winning all three doubles flights and not dropping a single match all day. The invitational also fielded teams from the University of Rhode Island, Monmouth University, Bryant University, and Holy Cross.
The Friars entered two teams into the tournament's A-flight, and both Friars' doubles teams advanced to the division's final. Senior Alana Prinos and Emma Burgess were handed a first round bye, and they followed that up with an 8-7 victory over Byrant in the draw's semifinals. The Friars' No. 2 duo of juniors Jennifer DeLuca and Amanda Pitocco cruised to an 8-1 win over Monmouth in their first round matchup. In the semifinal round, DeLuca and Pitocco scored one of their most impressive results of the fall as they knocked off URI's top doubles pairing by an 8-2 margin. The juniors volleyed particularly well, and DeLuca's forehand was sharp throughout the match. DeLuca and Pitocco's win set up an all Friar A-flight final, which was won by Prinos and Burgess 8-2.
The tandem of sophomore Nicole Cyterski and senior Hannah Zangari was the only Friar team in the tournament's B-flight, but they more than made up for that by sweeping their match play and earning another flight win for Providence College. Cyterski and Zangari began the day with an 8-0 win over Holy Cross. In the semifinals, the Friar duo ran into a competitive team from Bryant but they emerged with an 8-7 victory. In the B-flight finals, Cyterski and Zangari closed out their day with an 8-5 victory over another squad from Bryant. The Friars jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the match, and they were able to hold in their last two service games in order to seal the victory. Zangari was particularly impressive throughout the day, consistently driving her forehands deep and finishing off points with an array of volley winners.
In the C-flight, both Friars teams advanced to the draw's finals. Freshman Risa Takenaka and sophomore Katie Marvin cruised to an 8-2 victory over Monmouth in their first round match, and they followed that performance up with another 8-2 triumph against Holy Cross in a semifinal match. Marvin's big serve and strong net play complemented Takenaka's athleticism and smooth groundstrokes throughout the day, keeping the duo in control of each of their matches. The other Friar team consisting of sophomores Brooke Burnside and Katherine DeNucci cruised to an 8-4 win in their first round match against Bryant and advanced to the finals with a semifinal round win. In the flight finals, Takenaka and Marvin defeated their Friar teammates to complete the Providence College sweep of all three flights.
With the URI invitational behind them, the Friars will turn their attention to the fall season's final dual match, an Oct. 15 contest against the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. The Minutemen figure to be one of the toughest tests the Friars will face all year, but they are 0-1 on the young season after a 5-2 loss to the University of Connecticut.
