Tennis Defeated By University Of Massachusetts-Amherst, 7-0

The Providence College women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to the University of Massachusetts-Amherst at the Mullins Athletic Center on Thursday, Oct. 15. The match was the first loss of the fall season for the Friars, which closed out the session with a 3-1 record in dual matches.
UMass captured the doubles point by winning at all three doubles positions. The Friars' top pairing of senior Alana Prinos and sophomore Emma Burgess fell by a score of 6-2 to Anna Yrazusta and Carol Benito, while juniors Jennifer DeLuca and Amanda Pitocco lost 6-1 to the Minutemen's Anna Woosley and Ruth Crawford out of second doubles. UMass completed the sweep with a 6-2 win for Arielle Griffin and Lauren Moreno over Hannah Zangari and Katherine DeNucci in the third doubles match.
The Friars put forth a couple of strong singles efforts, but the Minutemen were able to defeat the away team across the board in singles play. DeLuca lost 6-2, 6-1 to Yrazusta in their second singles match, while Burgess fell by a score of 6-3, 6-1 to Woosley in the dual for third singles. In the fourth singles match, Pitocco was handled by Aarzoo Malik, 6-0, 6-1, and sophomore Brooke Burnside dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Moreno out of fifth singles. Freshman Risa Takenaka battled her way to a tiebreaker in the first set of the sixth singles match before falling 7-6 (6), 6-0 to Brittany Collens. In the first singles match, Prinos managed an impressive 6-4 win in the first set of play and then fell 4-6, 6-0, 11-9 to Crawford.
With the dual match schedule for the fall completed, the Friars will have one more week of practices before wrapping up tennis activities for the fall on Oct. 22 at the Regional ITA competition in Hanover, N.H.
