Final Stats PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's soccer team fell to DePaul, 2-1, on Sunday, Sept. 28 in Chicago, Ill. Senior Lia Bellizzi (Rye, N.Y.) scored the lone goal for the Friars. The Friars are 5-4-2 on the season, while DePaul advances to 9-0-2.
DePaul picked up the first goal in the second minute of play with a header from Amber Paul off an assist from Abby Reed. DePaul struck again in the 12th minute when Alexa Ben scored giving the Blue Demons a 2-0 lead.
The Friars responded in the 39th minute of play. Bellizzi notched an unassisted goal off a deflection for her first goal on the season.
In net for the Friars, sophomore Kristyn Shea (Piscataway, N.J.) recorded two saves. DePaul goalkeeper, Alejandra Godinez, registered one save.
"We had a slow start and DePaul took the advantage early into the game," said Head Coach Sam Lopes. "We responded well, got a goal back and created a few more chances where we could of been level at half time. Unfortunately, we lacked another gear and didn't make enough plays in the second half to get the equalizer. It was certainly a disappointing result against a nationally ranked undefeated team but not disappointed with the team's attitude or effort. We can take a lot from this game and continue with our preparations for our next BIG EAST opponent."
The Friars will face Creighton at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2 in Omaha, Neb.
