"It was a nice team win today," Head Coach Diane Madl said. "We picked it up in the second half and we were able to create some good attacking opportunities. Overall, it was a positive weekend that allowed us to gain some insight into what we are capable of."
The Friars out-shot Central Michigan, 11-7, in the opening 35 minutes and carried a 2-1 lead into halftime. Hamilton scored her second goal of the season in the 10th minute to give Providence a 1-0 advantage, as she converted a feed from junior Emma Mackie (Delta, British Columbia) following a penalty corner.
Central Michigan tied the game, 1-1, as Kaysie Gregory redirected a pass from Cayleigh Immelman at the 14:40 mark.
Providence regained the lead less than four minutes later as senior Steph Guglilemo (Castle Rock, Colo) received a pass in front of the goal from junior Salene Shaffer (Millerstown, Pa.). Guglielmo spun around her defender and found the back of the cage. Shaffer was credited with the assist. It marked Guglielmo's fifth goal of the season, and started a string of four-unanswered goals by the Friars en route to the 5-1 win.
After the break, the Friars extended their lead to two goals (3-1) as Hamilton tipped in a ball less than two minutes into the second half. It gave the rookie midfielder the first multiple-goal game of her career at Providence. Shaffer was credited with her second assist of the match on the play.
Senior Daniella Bernasconi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) joined the offensive attack in the 51st minute to give the Friars a 4-1 lead. The ball deflected off of a defender's stick and hit the post, but Bernasconi knocked it out of the air and into the back of the cage for her fourth goal of the year.
Mackie rounded out the scoring as she tallied her first goal of the season to give the Friars a commanding 5-1 lead in the 57th minute. She converted off of a rebound, after a barrage of shot attempts by the Friars.
Providence out-shot Central Michigan, 23-12, including a 12-5 edge in the decisive second half. The Friars also led the Chippewas in penalty corners, 8-6. Six of their eight corners came in the final 35 minutes.
Providence College returns to action with back-to-back home games next weekend vs. New Hampshire (Sept. 19) and Columbia (Sept. 21). Both games will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars and Wildcats will square off at 7 p.m. Friday night, followed by a 1 p.m. match-up against Columbia on Sunday afternoon.
