The Providence College men's soccer team was edged by Atlantic Coast Conference foe Clemson, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Ray Treacy Track. The Friars, who played their second overtime game in the past three days, move to 4-2-0 on the season, while the Tigers are now 3-3-0.
The Friars generated the game's first scoring chance in the eighth minute when Mac Steeves (Needham, Mass.) gathered the ball in the Clemson box, moved to the center to improve his angle but his right-footed drive deflected off of a Clemson defender for a corner kick.
Clemson earned a penalty kick after T.J. Casner was fouled in the Providence box at 24:47. Friar goalkeeper Keasel Broome (Claymont, Del.) guessed right and got a hand on the shot but Phanuel Kavita's drive found the back of the net to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
The Friars answered back in the 28th minute. Sophomore Julian Gressel (Neustadt an der Aisch, Germany) played a ball to the left-side of the Clemson box that Fabio Machado (Santa Catarina, Brazil) collected and fired into the far-side netting from a sharp angle for his first goal of the season.
Broome made an important save in the 35th minute when he dove to his left to deflect a Kyle Murphy drive from the top of the 16-yard box.
In the 53rd minute, Gressel came within inches of putting the Friars ahead when he brought down a Broome goal kick, advanced past one Clemson defender to just outside of the Clemson box on the right and curled a shot just past the far post with a second defender closing in on him.
The teams traded a few more second-half chances but neither side could find a go ahead goal.
In overtime, Clemson's Manolo Sanchez worked a pass from the end line back into the box where Oliver Shannon put it in from the top of the six-yard box.
Broome finished the match with six saves, while Clemson's Chris Glodack and Andrew Tarbell combined for three saves. For the game, Clemson held a slight advantage in shots, 13 to 12, while Providence had four corner kicks to the Tigers' three.
The Friars are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 20 when they play host to Northeastern in a 7:00 p.m. match at the Ray Treacy Track.
