Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The Providence College men's soccer team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against Northeastern and went on to post a 3-1 win on Saturday night at the Ray Treacy Track. With the victory, the Friars improve to 5-2-0 on the season, while Northeastern drops to 2-5-0.

The Friars took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute when Julian Gressel (Neustadt an der Aisch, Germany) broke into the box, gathered a chipped pass from Mac Steeves (Needham, Mass.), dribbled wide around Northeastern goalkeeper Dylan Faber and slammed his first of the year past the Northeastern defense attempting to block the shot.

The Friars doubled their lead in the 15th minute. After working down the field with a series of throw-ins, Phil Towler (Cumbria, England) played a ball back to Rob Bialy (East Greenwich, R.I.) on the far sideline. Bialy took a touch and then played a 20-yard pass to Fabio Machado (Santa Catarina, Brazil) in the box, who finished for his second goal of the season.

Northeastern's Brad Fountain put the Huskies on the board in the 20th minute when he placed a free-kick from 20-yards out to the far side of the Friar net.

In the second half, Towler nearly extended the Friar lead in the 61st minute when his 25-yard volley following a Friar corner kick fizzed just over the bar.

Manny Andrade (Fogo, Cape Verde) put the Friars up 3-1 in the 80th minute. He took a pass from Nick Sailor (Bloomfield, Conn.) at the near side of the box, moved towards the center and fired a shot to the far, low corner of the net for his second goal of the season.

In the Friar net, Keasel Broome (Claymont, Del.) finished with two saves. Faber made four saves for the Huskies. Providence out shot Northeastern 12-8 for the match, while Northeastern took five corner kicks to Providence's two.

The Friars are back in action at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27 when they open BIG EAST play at Marquette.
