Providence took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute when Mills found the back of the net, marking her first career goal. Zimmerman was awarded an assist on the play, marking her first assist of the season. The remainder of the half was scoreless and the Friars carried a 1-0 score into the break.
UMass evened the game, 1-1, in the 89th minute when Jackie Bruno recorded a goal with an assist from Madison Smith. Bruno's goal sent the game into overtime.
In the 97th minute of play, Zimmerman notched the game-winning goal and her second goal of the season. The assist was credited to freshman Rachel Morrier (Plaistow, N.H.), the first of her career.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kristyn Shea (Piscataway, N.J.) played all 97:25 minutes of the game, recording five saves.
"It was a tough road game against a tough opponent," said Head Coach Sam Lopes. "Playing on grass presented challenges. It was important to get the go ahead goal and manage the game from there. It was a tough goal to concede at the end, but the team quickly addressed it and challenged each other to give more. It was a rewarding feeling to see them celebrate a well-earned win."
Providence returns to action at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4 at the Ray Treacy Track to take on Boston University.
