BURLINGTON, VT. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Vermont, 5-1, in its season opener on Friday, Aug. 29 in Burlington, Vt. Senior midfielder Steph Guglielmo (Castle Rock, Colo.) recorded the first hat trick of her career in the victory, scoring two of her three goals in the Friars' decisive second half.

Vermont took advantage of its lone penalty corner of the game just 1:59 into the match, as Taylor Gaines fired a direct shot into the net, assisted by Molly Higgins and Aria Robinson. The Friars fought back to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Senior forward Daniella Bernasconi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) netted the equalizer at 12:53, as junior Emma Mackie (Delta, British Columbia) slipped a ball into Bernasconi from just outside the top of the circle. Bernasconi was alone with the goalkeeper, who had dropped to make a play, but she flicked the ball over the keeper and knocked it into the cage.

Guglielmo put the Friars ahead three minutes later as she tipped in a feed from Bernasconi at the right post. Bernasconi had received a long outlet pass up the left side of the field, and carried the ball into the circle along the baseline, where she provided a crossing pass to Guglielmo.

In the second half, Guglielmo tallied back-to-back goals in the 47th and 57th minutes of play. Her first of the span came off a rebound, unassisted, while her second was earned off a penalty corner. Graduate student Caitlin Malone (Ossining, N.Y.) was credited with the assist.

Sophomore Emily Humiston (Pittsburgh, Pa.) rounded out the scoring with her first collegiate goal in the 64th minute of the match. Humiston collected a loose ball off a rebound during a penalty corner and put it into the right side of the cage, unassisted.

Providence held a 33-3 advantage in shots versus the Catamounts and recorded a 9-1 edge in penalty corners. Twenty-one of the Friars' 33 shots were on goal.

Senior goalkeeper Deidra Clymer (South Windsor, Conn.) notched her first victory of the season with one save. Emily Snowden recorded 16 saves for Vermont.

The Friars return to action on Saturday, Aug. 30 with a neutral-site game against Lock Haven. The match will be played at the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vt. at 1:00 p.m. Providence hosts No. 13 Boston College on Friday, Sept. 5 in its home opener at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
