Connor Captures 5000 Meter IC4A Indoor Track Crown

BOSTON, Mass. - The Providence College men's track and field team began competition at the 93rd Annual ICAAAA Championship yesterday (March 8). The men had standout performances in the 5000 meter run, where sophomore Benjamin Connor (Derby, England) captured first.

Connor earned his first IC4A title in a pack of 28 competitors with a personal-best time of 14:08.11. Connor is the first Friar to post a win at the IC4A's since 2009 and the first Friar to capture a win in the 5000 meter run since Ahmed Haji `08 did so in 2008.

Connor was closely followed by junior Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.) in the 5000 meter in. Hillery finished third with a personal-best time of 14:13.17.

Sophomore Joseph Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) was the third Friar to capture a personal-record on the day. Vercollone qualified for the 1000 meter run final (to take place later today) with the fastest time of the day, 2:23.85.

The Friars will continue with competition at the IC4A Championships today (March 9) in Boston, Mass.
