Scouting the Spartans
Saturday's game will mark the third time that Providence and Michigan State have gone head-to-head, with the Spartans leading the all-time series 2-0-0. The last time the two teams faced each other was in Craig Stewart's first year as the Providence College men's soccer head coach (2012). The Friars fell to the Spartans 3-2 at home (Sept. 9). Providence's other game against Michigan State was in 2010 when the Friars suffered a 4-0 loss on the Spartans' home turf (Sept. 9).

This year also marks Michigan State's third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Spartan's secured the No. 3 seed for the Tournament, giving them a First Round bye. In the Second Round, Michigan State advanced to the Third Round after a 1-0 shutout of Oakland. In the Third Round, the Spartans tied Washington 2-2, advancing to the quarterfinal on penalty kicks (4-3). All-time, Michigan State has appeared in the NCAA tournament 17 times with a 24-13-3 NCAA Tournament record, including two co-championships (1967 and 1968) and four title game appearances.

The Spartans are 12-4-6 (4-2-2 B1G) on the season with five players scoring at least four goals. Jason Stacy leads Michigan State in points (15) with four goals and seven assists. Tim Kreutz and Zach Carroll are tied for the lead in goals with five.

Zach Bennet has played all but nine minutes in the Spartans goal. Bennett has a 12-4-6 overall record with a .830 save percentage, a 0.69 goals-against average and 12 shutouts on the season.

Re-Writing The Friar Records Book
This season the Friars have reached multiple program milestones. With a 1-0 win last Sunday night (Nov. 30) over UC Irvine in their first Third Round NCAA Tournament appearance, the 2014 Providence College men's soccer team will go down in the record books as the first team in program history to advance to the `Elite Eight' of the NCAA Tournament. The Friars have appeared in seven tournaments prior to this one, including 1983, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011 and 2013.

The Friars also added the most wins in a season (15) to the record book after their 2014 NCAA Tournament Third Round win, giving them a 15-4-2 overall record.

In addition, the 2014 Friars captured the program's first ever BIG EAST title, first NCAA Tournament First Round Bye, and first BIG EAST Tournament team Offensive and Defensive MVP's. The Friars also had the highest number of individuals receiving All-BIG EAST honors in one season with six (All- BIG EAST Second Team: Julian Gressel, Brandon Adler, Fabio Machado, Dominik Machado and Phil Towler; All-BIG EAST Rookie Team: Daniel Neustadter). The highest number of individuals in one season to receive All-BIG EAST honors prior to this year was in 2006 (Ryan Maduro, Chris Knopka and Tim Ritter were named to the All-BIG EAST First, Second and Third teams, respectively).

Stewart Guides Friars To NCAA Tournament Again
In just his third season as the Providence College men's soccer head coach, Craig Stewart has secured a second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance for the Friars. Stewart has led the Friars to an overall record of 15-4-2 headed into the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinal, including a 5-2-2 record in BIG EAST play. Stewart now has a 27-10-6 record (combined 2013-2014 seasons) when leading the team to an NCAA Tournament (31-10-3 overall record at Providence/as a Div. I head coach, 81-24-12 overall record as a head coach).

How Far Can They Go?
With a NCAA Tournament Third Round 1-0 shutout over UC Irvine on Nov. 30, the Friars advanced to the Quarterfinals of the Tournament for the first time in program history. With a win on Saturday, the Friars would advance to the Final Four to play the winner of the North Carolina/UCLA quarterfinal game.

Na-GOAL-stad
Markus Naglestad currently leads the Friars in goals with 10, including three goals in the last five games. Most recently, Naglestad scored the game-winning goal against UC Irvine. The game winner came off of a free kick from 30-yards out, over the UC Irvine wall.

Earlier in the season, Naglestad helped secure a victory over in-state rival Rhode Island on Aug. 30 after he scored four of the five Friar goals. Three of the four goals came within two minutes of each other (75:11, 76:07 and 77:11), breaking the NCAA Division I men's soccer record for the fastest three consecutive goals by the same player. The previous record was set on Oct. 20, 1985 by John Stone of SIU Edwardsville after he scored three goals within 2:15 of each other. For his efforts, Naglestad was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week (Sept. 1).

Broome Brings Experience To Playoffs
Keasel Broome is no stranger to the added pressure of playoffs. Broome currently has a 6-2-2 record in 10 career playoff starts (BIG EAST and NCAA), including a 2-1 win versus Creighton (Nov. 12, 2013), a 0-0 tie versus Georgetown (Nov. 15, 2013), a 3-2 loss against Marquette (Nov. 17), a 1-1 tie versus Penn (Nov. 21, 2013), a 3-1 loss against the Maryland Terrapins (Nov. 24, 2013), a 2-1 win versus Villanova (Nov. 11, 2014), a 1-0 shutout of Creighton (Nov. 14, 2014), a 2-1 win against Xavier (Nov. 16, 2014) to claim the BIG EAST Championship Title, a 3-0 shutout of Dartmouth in the NCAA Second Round (Nov. 23, 2014) and, most recently, a 1-0 shutout of UC Irvine in an NCAA Third Round match on Nov. 23.

Last season, Providence played to a tie twice in the playoffs, one in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament against Georgetown (Nov. 15) and the other in the first round of the NCAA Tournament versus Penn (Nov. 21). The Friars advanced in each of those in penalty kicks, 5-4 (Georgetown) and 3-1 (Penn), with Broome making five saves in each of those games.

For his career, Broome has a total of 33 saves, a .957 goals-against average and a .767 save percentage in playoff games.

Most Winning Team In Program History
Last Sunday's game (Nov. 30) marked the 15th win for the Friars this season, breaking the program record for wins in a season from 1984 (14 wins). The Friars now have a 15-4-2 overall record (5-2-2 BIG EAST).

Only Two Conference Champions Remain
Of the eight teams remaining in the NCAA Tournament, two are conference champions. UMBC (America East), along with Providence, won their 2014 conference tournament. UMBC defeated Hartford, 2-1, on Nov. 15 for the title.

Conference Champions Don't Allow Goals
UMBC and Providence, both conference champions (America East and BIG EAST), are the only remaining teams that have not allowed a goal for the entirety of the 2014 NCAA Tournament. UMBC tied Wake Forest, 0-0, in the First Round, advancing on penalty kicks (3-4). The Retrievers also shutout Maryland and Louisville, 1-0, in the Second and Third Round's of the Tournament, respectively.

Providence's shutouts were against Dartmouth (3-0) and UC Irvine (1-0), both on home turf.

Two Teams Make First Quarterfinal Appearances
Providence and UMBC have both made program history. The Friars and the Retrievers, two of the eight remaining teams, have each advanced to the NCAA quarterfinal for the first in program history. The other six teams have all advanced to the final four at least once in their program's history.

NCAA Third Round Recap
For the first time in program history, the Friars advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament after defeating UC Irvine, 1-0, in front of yet another large home crowd.

Providence's best chance in the early going came in the 19th minute on a quick counter attack as Fabio Machado made a defensive stop and fed Mac Steeves on the near flank. Steeves took a few touches and reversed field to Julian Gressel who beat a defender and slid the ball to Dominik Machado just inside the 18-yard box. Machado curled around a defender and cracked a shot that beat Anteater goalkeeper Michael Breslin, but it struck the cross bar and went out of bounds for a goal kick.

The teams traded a few chances for the rest of the half, including a near miss by Naglestad in the 41st minute when he fired a shot from 20-yards out that eluded a diving Breslin but went just wide of the far post.

The second half started off with some end-to-end action. Right off the kick, the Friars earned back-to-back corner kicks, but the UC Irvine defense held.

Then in the 53rd minute, the Anteaters had a great chance when Dennis Martinez whipped a cross into the box that Bryan Breslin headed towards the top corner of Keasel Broome's net, but Broome got his finger tips on it with an athletic dive to his left to keep the score knotted at 1-1.

In the 68th minute, Breslin was forced to jump off his line to snag a one-touch Gressel cross for an open Fabio Machado at the top of the six-yard box.

Naglestad put the Friars up 1-0 at 76:10 when he sent a free kick from 25-yards out over the Anteater wall and back down past a diving Breslin. It marked Naglestad's 10th goal of the season and his first of the NCAA Tournament.

NCAA Second Round Recap
The Providence College men's soccer team advanced to the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 23 after defeating Ivy League champion Dartmouth, 3-0, at the Ray Treacy Track and Field in front of a raucous home crowd.

Mac Steeves opened the scoring early in the second half and Dominik Machado scored two more as the BIG EAST Champion Friars improved to 14-4-2 on the season, tying the program record for wins in a season (1984).

The teams traded a few chances in the first half, with Providence's best opportunities coming on a Julian Gressel shot that was saved by Stefan Cleveland and cleared by Dartmouth defender Wyatt Omsberg as Markus Naglestad was looking to get on the end of the rebound.

Keasel Broome was busy in the Friar net, making three saves in the first 45 minutes including a diving stop on Colin Heffron's shot in the 29th minute.

The Friars took a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute following a nice passing play. Phil Towler settled the ball 20-yards out from goal and slid a pass to Jeff Kilday on the right side of the box. Kilday fired a cross along the ground to the six-yard box, where Steeves fired in his ninth goal of the year. It was Kilday's first assist of the season.

The Friars extended the lead to 2-0 in the 56th minute when Dominik Machado slid in and directed a Thomas Ballenthin cross from the far side past Cleveland. It marked Ballenthin's first assist of the season.

Machado then made it 3-0 in the 79th minute when he won a 50-50 ball at the top of the box and got around Cleveland to put it in the empty net.

Providence in the NCAA Tournament
The Friars have appeared in the NCAA Tournament eight times. Providence's first appearance occurred in 1983, while other appearances include the 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014 seasons.

NCAA Second Round Appearances
Providence advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in four of its seven NCAA appearances, including 2005, 2010, 2011 and 2013. But this season marks the first time in program history that the Friars earned a national seed and a First Round bye.

In 2005, the Friars advanced to the Second Round after defeating Hofstra, 1-0, in overtime in the First Round of the Championship, eventually losing to then No. 4 seed North Carolina.

The next two Second Round appearances occurred in consecutive years. Providence advanced to the Second Round in 2010 and 2011 after defeating Saint Peter's, 6-2 (2010) and Dartmouth, 1-0 (2011). In the Second Round, the Friars were defeated by No. 16 Ohio State, 2-1, in 2010 and by UC Santa Barbara, 3-2, in 2011.

In the Friars' last NCAA appearance (2013), Providence tied Penn in the First Round, 0-0, eventually advancing to the Second Round in penalty kicks, 3-1. Maryland defeated Providence in the Second Round that year, 3-1.

2014 BIG EAST Champions
The Friars were crowned BIG EAST Champions for the first time in program history on Nov. 16 after defeating Xavier, 2-1, in the 2014 BIG EAST Championship match at PPL Park (Chester, Pa.). Daniel Neustadter scored the game-winning goal in the 81st minute after Rob Bialy crossed the ball from the right side of the field to Neustadter, who slid in to direct the cross past the Xavier goalkeeper at the near post.

Xavier got out to a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute of the game but the Friars responded quickly for the equalizer. After a Dominik Machado shot was saved by the Xavier goalkeeper, Julian Gressel took a corner kick. The ball ended up back on the flank with Gressel, who headed the ball to Markus Naglestad 12-yards out in the center of the Xavier box. Naglestad then fired a shot into the top right of the net to tie the game, 1-1, at 25:06.

BIG EAST Presence In NCAA Tournament
Of the remaining eight teams in the 2014 NCAA tournament, three come from the BIG EAST Conference (Providence, Creighton and Georgetown), which is the most by any conference. The ACC has two teams remaining (North Carolina and Virginia), while the Big Ten, Pac 12 and America East each have one team (Michigan State, UCLA, UMBC).

Four BIG EAST Teams earned berths to the Tournament. Along with Providence earning the conference's automatic bid for winning its conference title, Creighton, Xavier and Georgetown each earned at-large bids.

Creighton's journey to the Elite Eight began after a first round bye, entering the Tournament as the No. 12 seed. The Blue Jays defeated Oregon State, 1-0, to advance to the Third Round. They then went on to face BIG EAST foe Xavier, defeating the Musketeers, 2-1.

Georgetown, like Providence and Creighton, also received a First Round bye as the No. 8 seed. In the Second Round, the Hoyas defeated Old Dominion, 2-1, in double overtime. In one of the Third Round games, Georgetown advanced to the quarterfinals after another overtime victory (2-1).

Xavier played in three rounds of the Tournament before being eliminated after Creighton defeated the Musketeers, 2-1. In the First Round, the Musketeers defeated Monmouth, 2-1, in double overtime and then went on to upset No. 5 seed Indiana, 2-1, in the Second Round.

From here on, Georgetown will face Virginia (Nov. 6), while Creighton and UMBC will play on Nov. 5.

Broome Posts 15th Career Shutout
In the 1-0 shutout of UC Irvine (Nov. 30), Friar goalkeeper Keasel Broomerecorded his eighth shutout of the season. The game also marked his 15th career shutout in a total of 55 games. His seven other shutouts this season came in a 2-0 win versus Bryant (8/29), a 2-0 win versus Holy Cross (9/5), a 0-0 tie versus Xavier (10/4), a 2-0 win at then third-ranked Georgetown (10/15), a 3-0 win at Seton Hall (Oct. 25), a BIG EAST Semifinal 1-0 shutout of No. 5 Creighton on Nov. 14 and a 3-0 shutout of Dartmouth (Nov. 23) in an NCAA Third Round game.

The Mac Attack
After scoring the first goal of the game against Dartmouth on Nov. 23, Mac Steeves registered his ninth goal of the season. Steeves has scored nine goals in the 20 games played thus far. Dating back to last season, Steeves has scored 12 goals in the last 28 games. Over the last two seasons, Providence also has an 11-1-0 record when Steeves scores.

Neustadter Makes His Goals Count
Freshman Daniel Neustadter, a German native, has registered two goals this season, both of which were game-winning goals. Neustadter's first goal as a Friar came in overtime against the Brown Bears giving Providence a 3-2 victory on the in-state rival's home field (Sept. 12). His other goal this season was what proved to be the game-winning goal in Providence's first ever BIG EAST Title win, 2-1, on Nov. 16 against Xavier at PPL Park in Chester, Pa.

Up Next
The winner of Saturday's midday match will move to the Semifinals of the College Cup on Friday, Dec. 12 to face the winner of the North Carolina/UCLA Quarterfinal game.

Road To Wakemed Soccer Park
The 2014 NCAA Semifinal and Final rounds will be hosted at the Wakemed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. (Dec. 12-Dec. 14). The semifinal matches will be played on Dec. 12, while the NCAA Championship game will be played on Dec. 14 and streamed live on ESPNU.

Friar Scoring Offense
The Providence scoring offense is currently ranked first in the conference and 19th in the nation (as of Nov. 30). Five players (Mac Steeves, Markus Naglestad, Fabio Machado, Julian Gressel and Dominik Machado) have combined for a total 33 goals and 18 assists for 84 points. Naglestad leads the Friars in goals with 10, while Steeves is second with nine. Fabio Machado also leads the Friars in assists with seven.

BIG EAST All-Tournament Team
Four Friars were named to the 2014 BIG EAST All-Tournament team. Brandon Adler (D), Markus Naglestad (F), Julian Gressel (M) and Keasel Broome (GK) were each named to the team. Naglestad also was named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the Tournament, while Adler was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player.

No. 4 Seed Takes The Win
Providence entered the BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 4 seed. Prior to the 2014 BIG EAST Championship game, the last time a team entered the Tournament as a No. 4 seed and went on to win the Championship was the 1995 St. John's squad.

In 1995, St. John's as the No. 4 seed, like Providence, faced the No. 2 seed, Pittsburgh. The Red Storm defeated the Panthers 2-0 in the Championship game.

Runner-up To Champion
Going from finishing second in the BIG EAST Tournament one year ago to winning the title the next year is not unheard of. Providence joins six other BIG EAST teams that were crowned Champions the year after finishing as the runner-up.

St. John's men's soccer experienced this three times in program history. First, when they were crowned BIG EAST Champions in 1992, falling in the championship game the year prior. Second, when they were the runners-up in '97 and champions in 1998, and third, when they won in 2009 after finishing second in 2008. It also happened with Rutgers (`96 runner-up, `97 champion), Seton Hall (runner-up `90, `91 champion) and Connecticut (`88 runner-up, `89 champion).

Providence In BIG EAST Championship Finals
Out of the last 12 seasons, Providence has clinched a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament 10 times. Last season, the Friars made a run to the BIG EAST Championship game, falling to Marquette 3-2. It was Providence's third appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament Championship game. The other championship appearances include 2010 when the Friars played to a 2-2 tie versus Louisville (the game was decided in PK's with Louisville beating Providence 3-2) and 1984 when the Friars fell to Connecticut, 1-0.

All-time, Providence has made 14 BIG EAST Tournament appearances since 1983. The Friars are 14-11-5 all-time in BIG EAST Tournament play.

In The Polls
Providence College men's soccer were sitting in the last five national polls of the season. On Nov. 18, the final NSCAA poll of the season was announced, with Providence ranked 10th in the nation.

The Friars jumped into the polls for the first time this season on Oct. 21 with a No. 10/23 (Soccer America/NSCAA) ranking. Following its No. 10/23 ranking, Providence moved up in the polls. On Oct. 28, the Friars were ranked 8th/11th (Soccer America/NSCAA), marking the first time since Nov. 16 2010 that the team had been ranked among the top-20 teams in the nation (19th/20th). On Nov. 11, the Friars were ranked 12th/23th (Soccer America/NSCAA) and on Nov. 4, the team was ranked 14th/19th (Soccer America/NSCAA).

Providence vs. Ranked Opponents
The Friars are 5-1-1 against ranked opponents this season (all but two games were road or neutral site games), including a 2-0 win at then No. 3 Georgetown (Oct. 15), a 1-1 tie at then 15th-ranked Marquette (Oct. 22), a 3-0 loss at No. 6 Creighton on Nov. 7, a 1-0 shutout of No. 5 Creighton at PPL Park in the BIG EAST Semifinal (Nov. 14), a 2-1 win in the BIG EAST Championships game against No. 11 Xavier (Nov. 16), a 3-0 home-game shutout of Dartmouth in the NCAA Second Round (Nov. 23) and a NCAA Third Round 1-0 win against No. 21 UC Irvine (Nov. 30).

Midseason Unbeaten Streak
Prior to Nov. 2, the Friars were on a nine-game unbeaten streak (7-0-2). Providence then suffered a 2-0 loss in Indianapolis, Ind. against Butler on Nov. 2, snapping the unbeaten streak. Since the Providence men's soccer program began in 1968, there have only been five unbeaten streaks of 10 or more games; 1970 (10 game unbeaten streak), 1972 (10 game unbeaten streak), 1983 (12 game unbeaten streak), 1984 (12 game unbeaten streak) and 2010 (10 game unbeaten streak).

Overtime With Craig Stewart
Over the last three years, under head coach Craig Stewart, the Friars have headed into overtime a total of 17 times combining for an overtime record of 5-3-9. Two of those overtime games occurred in conference and NCAA Tournament play.

Naglestad Sets NCAA Record
Red-shirt senior Markus Naglestad helped secure a victory over in-state rival Rhode Island on Aug. 30 after he scored four of the five Friar goals. Three of the four goals came within two minutes of each other (75:11, 76:07 and 77:11), breaking the NCAA Division I men's soccer record for the fastest three consecutive goals by the same player. The record was set on Oct. 20, 1985 by John Stone of SIU Edwardsville after he scored three goals within 2:15 of each other. For his efforts, Naglestad was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week (Sept. 1).
