Oct. 14, 2014 CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. - CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. - The Providence College men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed at the Northeast Catholic Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 11 at Boston College's Flynn Complex Aquatics Center. The men's and women's teams were not able to attend the first day of competition. Using the scores from Saturday's portion of the invitational, the women's team went 2-5 and the men's team went 0-4.
The women were led by freshman
Katherine Fallon (Warren, N.J.) who took first place in the 1000y freestyle (10:41.98) and third in the 200y freestyle (1:58.62). In the 100y breaststroke, senior
Leia Federiconi (Williamsville, N.Y.) placed second (1:08.71) while earning ninth in the 200y breaststroke (2:35.39). Sophomore
Helen Smith (Belmont, Mass.) tied for seventh in the 100y butterfly (1:01.15) and earned fifth in the 200y butterfly (2:15.95). Senior
Kelly O'Neill (Rye, N.Y.) took fifth in the 100y backstroke (1:02.08) and eighth in the 200y backstroke (2:16.66). The 400y freestyle relay team made up of sophomore

Abigail Belisle Haley (Yarmouth, Maine), and junior
Reilly O'Connell (West Barnstable, Mass.) took fourth place with a time of 3:46.08. The 200y medley relay team consisted of O'Neill, Federiconi, Smith, and Fallon and earned fifth place (1:53.75).
In their season opener, nine women qualified for the BIG EAST Championships. Senior

Abigail Belisle Haley (Yarmouth, Maine), and Smith qualified for the 100y butterfly, while Fallon and O'Connell qualified for the 200y freestyle. O'Connell also qualified for the 100y freestyle, while Smith qualified for the 200y butterfly. Freshman
Katherine Hickey (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Federiconi qualified in the 100y breaststroke. O'Neill earned a spot on the BIG EAST team in the 100y backstroke and 200y backstroke. Sophomore
Colleen Hartigan (Suffern, N.Y.) also qualified in the 200y backstroke.
On the men's side, senior
John Fatigati (Mahwah, N.J.) had two second-place finishes in the 400y IM (4:15.19) and in the 200y backstroke (1:58.97). Senior
Justin Tse (Framingham, Mass.) took fourth place in the 200y freestyle (1:47.96) while sophomore
Zachary Begnaud (Natchitoches, La.) took eighth (1:50.84). Begnaud also earned fifth in the 1000y freestyle (10:25.89) With a time of 2:16.82, freshman
Connor Fabian (LaGrange Park, Ill.) took fourth in the 200y breaststroke. Sophomore
Jordan Frielingsdorf (Hauppauge, N.Y.) took seventh place in the 1m diving event with 163.65 points. Tse, sophomore
Jonathan Mariner (Marion, Mass), Fatigati, and Begnaud made up the 400y freestyle relay team, which earned third place (3:20.35).
Four men earned a spot on the BIG EAST team. Fatigati qualified for the 400y IM and 200y backstroke. Tse qualified for the 200y freestyle, while sophomore
William Fierro Joyce (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) and Fabian qualified for the 100y breaststroke. Fabian also qualified for the 200y breaststroke.
Swimming and diving will hold their home opener on Friday, Oct. 24 against Bryant University at 5 p.m.
